must have: faux leather skater skirts.

Faux leather skater skirts top our list of fall must-haves. Whether stamped to mimic quilting, punched to lend airiness, or just short, sweet and simple, these skirts will take you from fall through winter and all the way into spring. Pair them with a chambray shirt and flats now; a turtleneck, tights and ankle boots when it gets cooler. When warmer temps roll around, spring-ify them with a sheer printed blouse and ladylike heels.

interview + kalamata-basil spread.

If you missed it this weekend, L was featured on the awesome blog Sophisticated in Style on Saturday. Check out the interview here. It’s an interesting look (if we do say so ourselves) into our blog, her stores Social and Dish, and our working relationship. Hope you enjoy!

And because no weekend is complete without a homemade appetizer, we want to share Kalamata-Basil Spread with you. This delicious vegetarian appetizer was forwarded to us by L’s mom. We’ll be honest – when we first read the recipe, we weren’t sure about the flavors. But O-M-G. This was so good – the feta and olives give the spread just the right level of saltiness, and the fresh basil (use a LOT – we did) makes it bright. Plus, it’s easy, easy, easy. This is our new go-to.

Kalamata-Basil Spread

What You Need:

  • 8 oz block 1/3 reduced fat cream cheese, softened
  • 8 oz reduced fat feta cheese, crumbled
  • 15 Kalamata olives, chopped (or half a 6 oz jar sliced Kalamata olives, chopped)
  • 3 or 4 sprigs fresh basil

What You Do:

  • Combine softened cream cheese and feta cheese. You can do this with a spoon, or with a hand mixer.
  • Fold in olives.
  • Roughly chop basil with scissors and fold into mixture.
  • Spread over toasted baguette slices. and garnish with more chopped basil if desired.

friday five: mother’s day.

Where would we be without Mom? Show her some love with these five great gifts. And since these are all gifts we’d love to receive ourselves…Moms, feel free to leave your laptops open to this post. HINT, HINT, Significant Others.

1. Blow Out: Treat Mom to a glamorous Dry Bar experience. Even better, make her blow-out last with this gift set. It includes a blow-out gift coaster, Detox Dry Shampoo and {everyone’s fave} Morning After Shower Cap.

The Glitter Life Dry Bar

2. Homemade Brunch: A reservation isn’t easy to come by on Mother’s Day. If you’re in the same city as Mom, cook her brunch at home (hers or yours) instead! L loves these foolproof recipes: Mushroom Spinach Frittata (EASY) and Cheddar Cheese Grits Casserole (EASIER). Both recipes are forgiving and open to interpretation. Add a little bacon to the frittata; add a little cayenne to the grits casserole. If Mom is a foodie (and you’re up for something fancier), try a delicious Roasted Asparagus & Goat Cheese Frittata. Bon appetit!

3. A Little Shopping: Tons of stores are celebrating Mother’s Day with mom-daughter shopping events. L’s boutiques Social and Dish are hosting MOMS + Mimosas this Saturday, May 11. Swing in with Mom, for Mom, or for yourself and enjoy 25% off any item. Not in Statesboro? Use promo code MOM13 to save on www.shopsocialdish.com.

shop for yourself AND mom and save.

4. DIY Gift: Our girl Lauren Conrad has a knack for cute crafts that score low on the frustration scale. All you need for an adorable Mother’s Day gift is a white coffee mug (or other dish) and a gold paint pen. So get creative! Spoiler alert: L made one of these for her mom, her mother-in-law, and herself.

so easy. so cute.
so easy. so cute.

5. Give back. Mother’s Day is an opportunity to thank the woman who gave you life. It’s also a chance to honor women around the world who are overcoming adversity.  There are so many options. Buy matching bracelets from 31 Bits for you and Mom – the proceeds help equip Ugandan women with literacy education, financial and vocational training, holistic care, and strong support systems. Or clean out your closets together and donate your gently used workwear to a local charity like Dress for Success, which has affiliates all over the United States. Do some research and choose a cause that resonates with you both. Mom will be so proud.

friday five: fresh.

FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY!

Despite the wretched weather in Georgia, or maybe because of it, we can’t stop thinking about spring. This week’s Friday Five is dedicated to all things fresh.

1. Fresh Produce. Spring means fresh produce! Most farmer’s markets will really kick into gear in a few weeks. Drop by your local farmer’s market and scoop whatever looks best to you. Ask questions if you don’t know how to prepare a certain veggie – most vendors are happy to share a recipe or two. Learn how to master your farmer’s market and how to keep your produce fresh with a few tips from Lauren Conrad.

2. Ice Cream Colors. What better way to welcome spring than with cupcakes made with your new pastel KitchenAid mixer? We love every single thing on this collage by Design*Sponge.

grrrrrrr we want that ikat console SO BAD.

3. EOS Mint Lip Balm. It’s minty. It’s tiny. It’s 95% organic (surely the other 5% won’t hurt us). We’re tossing our bright lipstick and using this natural lip balm this spring.

mint lip balm
buy a few: car, desk, handbag etc. ahhhh.

4. Mint Blazers. It’s no secret that we love a classic blazer. This time of year we start thinking about swapping our favorite navy jacket for a pastel version. Mint flatters every hair color and complexion, and it looks equally great with dark denim and white denim.

5. White Denim. Speaking of white denim, now is the time to buy the perfect white jean. The Kaylie Slim & Sexy Bootcut fit by 7 For All Mankind will carry you through spring and summer. We love the curvy fit and the not-too-big boot.

We’re working hard and playing hard this weekend. We’ll check back in on Monday!

Wait, you didn’t think we’d leave you for the weekend without a cocktail recipe, did you? That wouldn’t be very Glitter of us. In keeping with today’s theme, swap your usual wine for one of these mint-cucumber-vodka cocktails. Fresh!

weekend wrap-up: bulldog 100 + spring mani

Happy Monday, glitter girls!

WOW, what a great weekend. Shop Social Dish was honored at the Bulldog 100 event as one of the top ten fastest growing businesses started by a University of Georgia graduate. L and Joe (and L’s parents) spent a fantastic night at the awards dinner in Atlanta. J had family obligations but was there in spirit. L participated in a Strategy Cafe roundtable with the other honorees – what an awesome networking opportunity.

Thank you to all of our fantastic friends and customers (and those of you who are BOTH) who have made Social and Dish boutiques a success. We have big plans for 2013, and we can’t wait to share them with you on The Glitter Life.

Wine + Cheese
L’s sweet friend Mika sent over a bottle of wine and a cheese plate. a girl after our own hearts!

friday five: wardrobe staples.

WTF Should I Wear Today?
good question.

Ladies, it’s time for the truth. How often do you ask yourself that question? Pretty much every time you look in your closet? Same. Here. We’ve learned a few things over the years, though.

Getting dressed in the morning is a LOT easier when you have a few staples pieces at your fingertips. We’re talking pieces that pull together the random stuff in your closet. Your mission for this weekend: get your wardrobe in check with these five wardrobe essentials:

1. Solid blazer. Blazers are so versatile. Wear one over a crisp button- down or striped tee for day, and a sparkly tank or neon tee for night. Pair your blazer with pretty much any bottom: trousers, a mini skirt, a pleated skirt, shorts (even cut-offs). L legit wears a navy blazer every other day.

J.Crew Schoolboy Blazer

2. Ankle Pant. A tailored pair of pants work for the office, cocktails, brunch, etc. Wear with a button-down and/or jacket for the office; pair with a slouchy tee for the weekend. You’ll get tons of wear out of basic black (duh), but a printed pair is also versatile. Make sure you choose ankle-length pants, so you can wear them with flats or heels.

Asos Ankle Pants

Black Ankle Pant

3. Patent Pumps. A classic pair of black patent heels is always appropriate. Don’t be afraid to wear them with navy–we love that combo.

zara pump available at shopsocialdish.com. (only $39…EEK!)

4. Chambray Shirt. Chambray is a no-brainer for casual occasions, but it also works for the office and evening. Wear it under a suit for work (just make sure your jewelry is dressy), and pair with your brightest shorts or sparkliest skirt for an evening out. Pop your collar, roll your sleeves, and carry a fun clutch.

5. Go-To Bag. A handbag in a classic shape works for day or night. Choose one with a fun detail (like neon trim) to make a statement.

Melie Bianco Scarlett Bag
neutral + neon = the perfect spring bag. this one by Melie Bianco made an appearance in the Social Dish Spring 2013 photo shoot!

behind the scenes: atlanta gift mart.

Happy Monday, glitter girls!

J and I had a fantastic weekend in Atlanta, shopping for Social and Dish at the Atlanta Gift Mart. Just like when we went to MAGIC in Vegas, we’ll let our behind-the-scenes pics tell the story…

Lucky May + Apps
we started our weekend off with a strategy meeting (reading Lucky Magazine for inspiration!) and appetizers at j’s house.
Essie Sand Tropez
of course we had to have matching nails for the weekend: sand tropez by essie is the perfect nude.
Leather Shorts + Sweater
headed to dinner in faux leather shorts,  fisherman sweater and heels from social.
Tweed Blazer + Lace Skirt
J in an H&M tweed jacket, Forever 21 lace shorts and Jessica Simpson heels.
Ahi Tacos
these ahi tacos at del frisco’s grille were amazing.
Black Eyed Pea Hummus
i’m going to try to recreate the black-eyed pea hummus that came with these pickled vegetables.
Books
we’re super excited about these entertaining books we ordered for dish.
White Tree
we fell in LOVE with this white tree. we’ll use it to display jewelry at social!
French Bull Dishes
these bright French Bull dishes were a no-brainer for dish.
French Bull Dishes
this display sent us on a (ultimately successful!) search for red tables.
Wooden Display Shelf
we loved this rustic shelf for a store display.
Snakeskin Sawhorse Desk
when we hit it big, we’ll set up an office with matching snakeskin sawhorse desks (two’s company).
Cheese Plate
we munched on cheese and had some wine at silver linings, one of our fave showrooms. there’s a reason we scheduled that appointment for 430pm. #happyhour
Champagne...on tap
met up with some of our Atlanta friends at lure after our last showroom appointment. champagne on tap? sign us up.
Scallop Skewer
we each ordered one of these delicious scallop skewers for a quick bite.
White Wicker Chair
we started our saturday at IKEA, searching for store fixtures. how cute is this white wicker chair for displaying pillows at dish?
Ikea Pod Chair
i almost bought this cool pod chair for baby joe–it has a little shade you can pull down, like a cocoon!
Mirrored Chest
we got a little distracted shopping for ourselves at z gallerie.
Hummus
finished our shopping with a late lunch at yardhouse in Atlantic Station. hummus and an ahi salad…yep, we order the same things everywhere we go.
Ahi Salad
ahi crunchy salad.
Patio at Yard Haus
it was a gorgeous day in atlanta, so we enjoyed the patio and a glass of wine. cheers!

Whew! What do you think of our inventory picks for Social and Dish? Did you eat anywhere amazing this weekend? What color were your nails? Tweet us @glitter_blog_xo!
