omelet muffins.

We are big fans of breakfast here at The Glitter Life. We believe in beginning our days with something fresh and healthy – breakfast boosts our metabolism AND our mood. While there’s no denying the nutritional goodness of a green smoothie, we usually need something a little more solid (and a little less time and dishwasher-space consuming). Voila, these genius Omelet Muffins! Make a batch on the weekend and just reheat one before you run out the door.

These are totally customizable. Add healthy protein (turkey bacon, diced ham, soy sausage crumbles), cheese and veggies to create your perfect combination.

Omelet Muffins adapted from Lauren Conrad

rise and shine!
rise and shine!

Ingredients:

  • muffin pan
  • 6 eggs (beaten and seasoned a pinch of salt and pepper)
  • mix-ins…

-diced ham
-bacon
-carrots
-tomatoes
-onions
-spinach
-bell pepper
-shredded cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and generously grease the bottoms and sides of your muffin pan to ensure a stick-free removal once the omelets are done baking.
  2. Make sure your eggs are beaten and you’ve added the salt and pepper.
  3. Fill the bottoms of your muffin pan (about 1/3 of each individual tin) with the different mix-ins you chose.
  4. Then fill the tins with your eggs. The omelets will puff up a little when you bake them, so make sure to leave just a tiny bit of space at the top of each tin. Stir each mixture slightly to combine your eggs with the ingredients.
  5. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until you can poke the centers with a knife and it comes out clean (or almost clean).

Enjoy!

friday five: back to school beauty.

It’s been a while since we geared up for “back to school” shopping madness. Still, we want in on the excitement of creating a new look for the new school year. So instead of new clothes, we’re opting for a beauty refresher. It’s time to switch up our hairstyles and tweak our beauty routine. We’re making the following changes, starting this weekend:

1. Sophisticated Hair. Bye bye, side braid. It’s time for something more polished. Try a simple side twist to add interest to gorgeous loose curls. Now, if only the humidity would cooperate…

The Glitter Life Lauren Conrad
our girl Lauren Conrad can do no wrong.

2. Fresh Nails. J came across the most PERFECT fall color by Essie (shocking!) this week. You need Bahama Mama in your life this season.

The Glitter Life Nail Polish

3. Dark Lips. Fall means darker, richer everything, so ditch your summer nude gloss for a spicy lip color. We heart this deep red lip + LBD combo.

Whitney Port The Glitter Life
we’re having a hills moment, clearly. LOVE this look.

4. Mermaid Eyes. We’re firm believers in easy make-up that takes you from day to night. Smokey eyes can do just that – just refresh your eyeliner and add a layer or two of shadow. This teal smokey eye is a nice update from our usual black and grey look.

5. Skin Care. Undo your summer sun damage with a retinol product. L swears by this SkinMedica Tri-Retinol Complex. Don’t believe us? It was recently featured in Marie Claire magazine! Add it to your usual anti-aging routine: switch your usual anti-wrinkle products to every other night, and use this on the off nights. If you’re in Statesboro, you can scoop this at Dr. Marc Bisseck’s Med Spa.

friday five: things to try.

Weekends are the perfect time to break out of your rut and try something new. Read on for our suggestions for a fabulous summer weekend, starting now!

1. Make a Golden Girl Cocktail. We love, love love trying new cocktails…especially when they’re easy to make. And ESPECIALLY when they’re named after one of the most fantastic sitcoms of all time. Click here for the recipe.

2. Have Dinner Somewhere New. J and Jay dined at at Atlanta hotspot The Optimist for the first time last week and absolutely loved it. Their menu changes daily, and if you’re lucky enough to dine there when bank scallops are an option,  DO IT. You’ll be glad you did.

3. Try a Waterfall Braid. We’ve been dying to try a waterfall braid, but um…it doesn’t look easy.

must…learn…how to do…

We’re going to attempt it though, using this helpful video tutorial from Hair and Makeup By Steph.

4. Bring on the Bling. We love the idea of a simple white dress paired with amazing statement earrings for the weekend. These Kate Spade beauties fit the bill.

color + sparkle.

5. Style Your Coffee Table. The weekend is the perfect time to tackle one area of your home and re-style it. If you’re like us, you’re more creative on the weekends, and you have time to run out and scoop some new accessories if you need them. Plus, tackling one area at a time keeps us from getting overwhelmed. So dust off your table and clear away the junk (and the remotes). Add some pretty books (check out Lauren Conrad’s list of favorite coffee table books here), a scented candle, and a few of your favorite random objects. We also love these inspiring links: the every girl, cupcakes and cashmere, and house beautiful. Re-styling this oft-neglected area can really change the feel of your home.

friday five: mother’s day.

Where would we be without Mom? Show her some love with these five great gifts. And since these are all gifts we’d love to receive ourselves…Moms, feel free to leave your laptops open to this post. HINT, HINT, Significant Others.

1. Blow Out: Treat Mom to a glamorous Dry Bar experience. Even better, make her blow-out last with this gift set. It includes a blow-out gift coaster, Detox Dry Shampoo and {everyone’s fave} Morning After Shower Cap.

The Glitter Life Dry Bar

2. Homemade Brunch: A reservation isn’t easy to come by on Mother’s Day. If you’re in the same city as Mom, cook her brunch at home (hers or yours) instead! L loves these foolproof recipes: Mushroom Spinach Frittata (EASY) and Cheddar Cheese Grits Casserole (EASIER). Both recipes are forgiving and open to interpretation. Add a little bacon to the frittata; add a little cayenne to the grits casserole. If Mom is a foodie (and you’re up for something fancier), try a delicious Roasted Asparagus & Goat Cheese Frittata. Bon appetit!

3. A Little Shopping: Tons of stores are celebrating Mother’s Day with mom-daughter shopping events. L’s boutiques Social and Dish are hosting MOMS + Mimosas this Saturday, May 11. Swing in with Mom, for Mom, or for yourself and enjoy 25% off any item. Not in Statesboro? Use promo code MOM13 to save on www.shopsocialdish.com.

4. DIY Gift: Our girl Lauren Conrad has a knack for cute crafts that score low on the frustration scale. All you need for an adorable Mother’s Day gift is a white coffee mug (or other dish) and a gold paint pen. So get creative! Spoiler alert: L made one of these for her mom, her mother-in-law, and herself.

so easy. so cute.
so easy. so cute.

5. Give back. Mother’s Day is an opportunity to thank the woman who gave you life. It’s also a chance to honor women around the world who are overcoming adversity.  There are so many options. Buy matching bracelets from 31 Bits for you and Mom – the proceeds help equip Ugandan women with literacy education, financial and vocational training, holistic care, and strong support systems. Or clean out your closets together and donate your gently used workwear to a local charity like Dress for Success, which has affiliates all over the United States. Do some research and choose a cause that resonates with you both. Mom will be so proud.

friday five: pick-me-ups.

We can’t lie. It’s been a long week. L has been sick, J’s been swamped at work, and the weather down south has been super depressing. So, in true Glitter Girl style, we’re planning a fun and productive weekend to shake these rainy day WEEK blues. Here’s our plan:

1. Decorate. A little Target-ing always lifts our mood.  A few pics of some recent Target finds..

Coral Pillow
this coral pillow adds life to L’s leather couch.
Nate Berkus Gold Bowl
L scooped this Nate Berkus for Target gold bowl during the holidays.

Have you seen the new and improved Threshold for Target collection? This iron wire table is a MUST have.

Threshold for Target
at $69, why not?

2. Make. Inspired by J’s recent purchase of a green guacamole bowl (from Target! we can’t stop.), we’re going to whip up this fresh Edamame Guacamole on Saturday afternoon and cross our fingers for patio weather. Just add pita chips and a cocktail.

Edamame Guacamole
image: two peas and their pod.

3. Makeover. Our closets, that is. L’s closet is jammed with hangers, and J’s bedroom is a maze of laundry piles. Inspired by this article on Lauren Conrad and this post on Cupcakes and Cashmere, we’re going to at least START spring cleaning our closets.

Messy Closet
before: yikes.
Organized Closet
this is the “after” we’re going for. image: cupcakes and cashmere.

4. Shop. Now that we have some room in our closets, we’re going to reward our superior organization skills with a few spring wardrobe purchases. What? We deserve it! Our picks:

Floral Button Down
L: i’m obsessed with button down shirts, and this pretty floral will energize my trusty navy blazer and white denim. gap.com.
BCBG Madria Sandal
J: I’m reeeally feeling this BCBG Madria Sandal. Pair with white jeans or shorts… done.

5. Nails. What would our Friday Five be without a new nail color? J’s picking up Essie’s Bikini So Teeny at lunch today.

at least our nails will be springy in this sparkly, cornflower blue.

up-dos.

J and I both love an up-do. Especially on Day 4 (don’t tell us you’re washing your hair every day!). On Sunday, overwhelmed with 1) dirty hair and 2) about five minutes to get ready, I threw my hair in a French twist…which looked pretty good. It got me thinking about other (easy) up-dos to try.

Here are some of my faves:

Love this side-swept French Twist – use a teasing comb and dry shampoo to achieve this look. Leave your top layers (or bangs) out for a looser look. Bobby pin them near your ear if they’re too long.

Up Do #1
kate upton.

The side bun is THE up-do of the season (even though there’s not a lot of “up” to it). Curl your hair with a curling iron, gather your hair in a deep side part, and twist the curls into a knot covering the opposite ear from your part. Use bobby pins to pin the knot in place.

Up Do #2
jessica lu.

A high bun is easy for the up-do novice. Gather your hair in a high half-pony (don’t pull it all the way through). Twist the ends around the knot and secure with bobby pins. Unlike the first two looks, this one should be clean and crisp. Smooth your whispies with hairspray, and make sure the hair underneath the bun is smooth.

Up-Do #3
lauren conrad.

And here’s a mini-tutorial for an up-do perfect for short or medium-length hair. Twist one side across the back and secure with bobby pins. Ditto for the other side, pinning the ends opposite the first side. Voila!

Quick Twist
easy.

Here’s my French twist:

For all of these, you’ll need:

hair spray // rubber bands // teasing comb // bobby pins // dry shampoo

What’s your favorite up-do?

Leibster Award + Noms

Liebster-Award
We were super psyched when Katie over at Confessions of a Southern Fashionista nominated us for a Leibster Award. Thanks, Katie! We love your blog, too. As a nominee, we had to answer eleven questions from Katie, nominate eleven other bloggers, and post eleven questions for them to answer. Whew!
First, our answers.
1. Who’s your favorite fashion designer?
J and I both agree on this one: Tory Burch. Sure we love her clothes – they’re the perfect mix of preppy and boho – but we also admire her charity work and her mentoring of women entrepreneurs.
2.  What’s your favorite color?
Glitter.
3. Gold or Silver?
Glitter. Fine, gold.
4. If you won the lottery would you spend the money, save it, or both?
We would invest in a plane (a small one, okay?) so that we could work together in person (rather than over g-chat) more than once a month.
5. If you had to live in any other decade, which would it be and why? We’re thinking the 70s. Yacht rock, Studio 54, Halston…you feel us?
6. Who’s your fashion icon?
The term “icon” may not apply here, but we really admire Lauren Conrad. her style is girly without being Taylor Swift-y, always appropriate and just plain pretty. We have a girl crush.
7.  What’s your favorite hobby?
Our favorite hobby is also our job – buying for, marketing for and growing our stores Social and Dish. Do what you love and you will never work another day in your life! Painting our nails is a close, CLOSE second.
8. If money was no object, where would you travel in the world?
We’d hop on the PGA tour circuit and watch our friends at Chase 54 take over the world of golf apparel.
9. iPhone, Droid, or Blackberry?
10.  If you could only live in one city for the rest of your life, would it be NYC, Paris, or Milan?
Call us crazy, but we love where we live! We’re Georgia girls through and through. We wouldn’t refuse invites to visit any of these cities though…so keep us in mind.
11. Which show inspires your fashion choices more, SATC or GG?
Eh, neither. For fashion inspiration, we love period shows like Downton Abbey (10s/20s) and Mad Men (50s/60s). The new FX drama The Americans (80s) is our new favorite – we spotted a pair of Guess jeans last week! We wouldn’t necessarily wear these looks, but we love the retro referencing.
Now, our nominations. We love all of these blogs, so check em out if you have time!
1. Amanda at Carefree Blonde
2. Kelly at Austen Hill
3. Gerdie at Love Gerdie
5. Rachel at Front Row Seat
8. Kenya at Life with Giggles
9. Christina at Virginia Belle
10. Kristyn at Chits and Giggles
11. Katie at Confessions of a Southern Fashionista (we can nominate you again, right?)
And finally, our questions.
1. Whose writing inspires you most?
2. What’s your favorite sushi roll?
3. Cupcakes or cookies?
4. Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Roman Holiday?
5. Los Angeles in the 40s or New York City in the 60s? We’re talking decades, not temperatures.
6. What is your go-to nail polish shade?
7. If you could own one lipstick, what would it be?
8. Your house is on fire and you can only save one item in your closet. WHICH ONE?
9. Kim, Kourtney or Khloe?
10. Cheese plate or dessert?
11. You can only order one cocktail for the rest of your life. WHAT IS IT?
Take a peek at our nominations and discover a new blog today!

friday five: fresh.

FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY!

Despite the wretched weather in Georgia, or maybe because of it, we can’t stop thinking about spring. This week’s Friday Five is dedicated to all things fresh.

1. Fresh Produce. Spring means fresh produce! Most farmer’s markets will really kick into gear in a few weeks. Drop by your local farmer’s market and scoop whatever looks best to you. Ask questions if you don’t know how to prepare a certain veggie – most vendors are happy to share a recipe or two. Learn how to master your farmer’s market and how to keep your produce fresh with a few tips from Lauren Conrad.

2. Ice Cream Colors. What better way to welcome spring than with cupcakes made with your new pastel KitchenAid mixer? We love every single thing on this collage by Design*Sponge.

ice cream colors
grrrrrrr we want that ikat console SO BAD.

3. EOS Mint Lip Balm. It’s minty. It’s tiny. It’s 95% organic (surely the other 5% won’t hurt us). We’re tossing our bright lipstick and using this natural lip balm this spring.

mint lip balm
buy a few: car, desk, handbag etc. ahhhh.

4. Mint Blazers. It’s no secret that we love a classic blazer. This time of year we start thinking about swapping our favorite navy jacket for a pastel version. Mint flatters every hair color and complexion, and it looks equally great with dark denim and white denim.

5. White Denim. Speaking of white denim, now is the time to buy the perfect white jean. The Kaylie Slim & Sexy Bootcut fit by 7 For All Mankind will carry you through spring and summer. We love the curvy fit and the not-too-big boot.

We’re working hard and playing hard this weekend. We’ll check back in on Monday!

green smoothie.

Happy Wednesday, glitter girls!

Inspired by this recipe on Lauren Conrad, and emboldened by a hand-me-down blender from my mother, I decided to give smoothies a try. I mean, why not? Our immune systems are struggling this time of year, and we’re in the mood for a boost. After some experimenting, I came up with a healthy recipe that is actually pretty delicious.

Smoothie Ingredients
fresh, yummy ingredients…but how will they taste all together?
  • 1 cup raw kale, chopped (you can find this bagged up at any grocery store, even Wal-Mart)
  • 1 frozen banana, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup mango (you can use fresh or frozen)
  • 1 teaspoon flaxseed (you could also use chia seeds)
  • 1 quarter lemon, squeezed
  • three handfuls of crushed ice (or more, if you like a thinner smoothie)
Green Smoothie
whipping it up in my kitchen.

Pulse all ingredients together until you reach the desired consistency. Done!

Finished Product
verdict: delicious!

This took like two seconds to make. It would come together even more quickly if you chopped and froze your banana and mango in individual portions the night before. Then, in the morning rush, all you have to do it toss, pulse, and pour the smoothie in your favorite travel cup and leave the blender for someone else to wash. 😉

Do you have a favorite smoothie recipe? What’s your go-to healthy drink? Tweet us at @glitter_blog_xo!

work it.

Happy Wednesday, glitter girls!

We know, we know. One of your New Year’s resolutions is to work out / get in shape / be more active / lose weight. Here are some tips to get you going!

Fuel Up: Often, it’s a Herculean task just to get ourselves to the gym. We can’t be bothered with a pre-workout snack, too! Turns out, eating before you sweat is a big deal–it jump-starts your metabolism (can’t argue with that). It’s also important to eat after you exercise, so you don’t start burning muscle (eeek!). Allison at Lauren Conrad has some great tips for what to eat before your workout (no matter what time you like to hit the gym) and after. Bottom line: bananas are our friends.

Workout Snacks
image: Lauren Conrad

Dress the Part: Is it just us, or is exercising easier when you love what you’re wearing? We’ve talked about workout wear before, but here are a few new suggestions.

1) Sports Bra. If you don’t like your sports bra, you won’t like exercising. L’s favorite is the New Balance Bonita Run Crop. The back straps as well as the band are adjustable, so you get a much more precise fit than most sports bras.

New Balance Sports Bra
an adjustable band is key if you’re bigger in the bust but smaller in the ribcage.

2. Top. J loves this top from LuluLemon. “I’ve basically worn it every day since I got it for Christmas!”

Lululemon top
bonus: it’s reversible.

3. Leggings. We both love C9 by Champion compression leggings. And we may or may not admit to wearing them as pants on our non-workout days.

Champion Leggings
we go for basic black…but we also like this fun printed pair!

4. Shoes. L is a big fan of the Nike Lunarglide and the New Balance Minimus (depending on your fitness goal).

Nike LunarGlide
Nike Lunarglides are nice compromise between a traditional running shoe and a minimal shoe.
New Balance Minimus
be sure to start slowly when you switch to the Minimus. the minimal cushioning takes some getting used to.

The Workout: If you think you’d enjoy running, try a Couch to 5K program. Running a 5K is a really reasonable goal, and you can find a race just about every weekend, no matter where you live. This program tells you exactly how to train to run a 5K in six weeks.

Looking for something you can do right here, right now? Try this simple 3-step Ballerina Body Workout we found in Cosmo.

Ballet Pose
cardio is great for fat-burning, but a ballet-inspired workout will sculpt and trim you all over.

Whew! Writing that post was a workout in itself. How do you like to keep fit? What trends are you thinking of trying? Tweet us at @glitter_blog_xo!
