belle de jour.

If you’re a regular Glitter Life reader, you know that we love fresh, blown out hair to start the weekend. Last week, J was invited to get a blow-out at Belle de Jour. Her report:

Belle de jour is a beautiful salon in Buckhead. Both males and females flock to this hidden gem off Roswell Road. Belle de Jour offers a wide variety of services including bridal party hair/makeup and lashes, but they pride themselves on their cut/color ability. My stylist, Vanessa Vinci, was absolutely wonderful. The salon now carries Oribe Luxury Hair Care products…and let me tell you, they did not disappoint. I fell in love with {and ultimately purchased} the soft lacquer styling spray.

If you’re looking for the perfect gift to give your girlfriends, Belle de Jour offers these adorable {see below} damask print bags that you can fill with buy 2, get 1 free makeup products! And if you’re working long hours, Belle de Jour is totally flexible as far as scheduling. We really like that kind of attitude.

The Glitter Life Birchbox

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator: This scrub is fairly gentle and not too abrasive. It left my skin feeling radiant and polished!

POP Beauty Aqua Lacquer: Just the right amount of color! Nice texture, not sticky.

Tiossan Body Cream: Eeeek. I can’t love everything, right? This body cream smells less than pleasant and is NOT easy to rub in…

Color Club® Cocktail Hour Collection: I received the pretty bronzy “Top Shelf” shade. Super fun for this holiday season!

Ahmad Teas Assorted Teas: REALLY loved the English Tea. Prefect for these chilly mornings and nights in Atlanta.

friday five: back to school beauty.

It’s been a while since we geared up for “back to school” shopping madness. Still, we want in on the excitement of creating a new look for the new school year. So instead of new clothes, we’re opting for a beauty refresher. It’s time to switch up our hairstyles and tweak our beauty routine. We’re making the following changes, starting this weekend:

1. Sophisticated Hair. Bye bye, side braid. It’s time for something more polished. Try a simple side twist to add interest to gorgeous loose curls. Now, if only the humidity would cooperate…

The Glitter Life Lauren Conrad
our girl Lauren Conrad can do no wrong.

2. Fresh Nails. J came across the most PERFECT fall color by Essie (shocking!) this week. You need Bahama Mama in your life this season.

The Glitter Life Nail Polish
burgundy bliss.

3. Dark Lips. Fall means darker, richer everything, so ditch your summer nude gloss for a spicy lip color. We heart this deep red lip + LBD combo.

Whitney Port The Glitter Life
we’re having a hills moment, clearly. LOVE this look.

4. Mermaid Eyes. We’re firm believers in easy make-up that takes you from day to night. Smokey eyes can do just that – just refresh your eyeliner and add a layer or two of shadow. This teal smokey eye is a nice update from our usual black and grey look.

5. Skin Care. Undo your summer sun damage with a retinol product. L swears by this SkinMedica Tri-Retinol Complex. Don’t believe us? It was recently featured in Marie Claire magazine! Add it to your usual anti-aging routine: switch your usual anti-wrinkle products to every other night, and use this on the off nights. If you’re in Statesboro, you can scoop this at Dr. Marc Bisseck’s Med Spa.

The Glitter Life Highlighting
image via kissable complexions.

Contouring and highlighting your face makes your skin glow, helps minimize or maximize facial features and gives you that finished sheen you see in magazines. Fantastic, right? Here are the products you need to achieve a flawless look.

Bronzer

Bronzer should enhance your complexion so pick something that compliments the natural pigments in your skin. If you have warm undertones, opt for something with a peach base. If you have cooler undertones, pick an earth-colored bronzer.

The Glitter Life Smashbox

Highlighter

If you have a cool skin tone, go with a highlighter that is both light and iridescent. If you have a warmer skin tone—stick with a highlighter with a warmer undertone.

Blush

Pinch your cheeks and take note of the color they turn right after—whatever shade you see should be reminiscent of the blush you decide to use. Still not sure? Go with a universally flattering apricot or rosy hue.

literally the best.

beauty buys.

We’ve been doing some shopping lately – no surprise – and we’ve been feeling especially grabby in the cosmetics department. Here’s the low-down on what we scooped in the last few days:

1. Dior: Diorskin Airflash Spray Foundation. Worth every penny. It’s not heavy- looking, but it does give you a nice finished look that lasts throughout the day. It dries a little darker, so try a shade lighter than your skin tone. And wear a headband when applying so it doesn’t look like you’re due for a dye job!

The Glitter Life

2. Benefit Cosmetics: Dandelion Luminizer. This product typifies the great quality I’ve come to expect from all Benefit products. Apply it lightly for a subtle, natural-looking pink; build up from there.

The Glitter Life

3. Tigi Your Highness Shampoo/Conditioner. Sometimes our long, heavy hair needs a LIFT. J’s mom introduced her to the Your Highness (cute!) Volume Collection, which does the trick and smells delicious.

The Glitter Life

4. L’oreal: Sublime Bronze Airbrush.  We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. We’re obsessed with L’Oreal’s sunless tanning products. J was super eager to try their new deep natural tan shade. It’s perfect (we could have guessed that).

The Glitter Life

5. Garnier Nutrioniste Ultra Lift Pro Intensive Deep Wrinkle Night Cream. It’s a mouthful…but L loves this stuff. It feels nice and thick going on, but dries to a super smooth finish on your skin.

The Glitter Life

6. Wet N Wild MegaSlicks Lip Gloss in Bronze Berry. You know we’re suckers for a neutral (and cheap) lip-gloss. This Wet N Wild gloss may replace our go-to gloss this summer. It’s a little darker than our beloved NYC Everlasting Blossom…but we’re feeling it!

April 2013 Birchbox.

Hi Glitter Girls!

This month’s Birchbox review is brought to you by our favorite nail artist and most loyal West Coast reader Jennifer Favela.

“So excited about April’s Birchbox! Let’s get into it!:

Atelier Cologne, Orange Sanguine.

I wasn’t too sure about this one just because I am not big on reeeeally citrus-y (that’s a word right?!) scents. But I was so wrong! It smells wonderful! And a big plus that I always look for in a scent? It lasts the whole day without needing to re-apply! Win-win right? This particular scent is very concentrated so you only need a little dab and you are good to go.

fresh, crisp, sweet.
fresh, crisp, sweet.

 Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate.

I LOVE anything Kiehl’s. AND since I am now in my last year of my 20’s (eek!) I have found myself starting to freak out about lines and wrinkles so I was so excited about this product. It is packed with vitamin C which apparently not only helps me kick colds to the curb but is great for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Yay!

pure vitamin c, ladies.

Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixer.

Okay, how did Birchbox know I wanted this?? As an avid flat-ironer, curling iron user, hair color-er, my hair is always in need of extra moisture! I may just have to purchase the full size on this one…

rejuvenate and hydrate. it is key.

Mirenesse Glossy Kiss.

Lipstick pencils are my new obsession and this one is awesome! It is a mix between a lip stain and a creamy balm. Mine came in the perfect shade of red (called, “Flirty Kiss”) and I can’t wait to wear it out this weekend during my mini-getaway to San Diego! It glides on SO smooth and feels very moisturizing. Bonus: it can double as a cheek stain! I don’t know if I would use red for my cheeks, but the pink color they make (“Cheeky Kiss”) would be adorbs! The one downside? It’s not very long lasting on the lips. BUT it is the perfect little skinny size to fit in my clutch for re-application throughout the night!

Simple Revitalizing Eye Roll-on

Not only is this an amazing product at a great price that you can pick up at your local drugstore, but it really works! I just swipe it under each eye, let it absorb and go on with my morning beauty routine! It reduces puffiness AND softens. I love how it rolls on smooth and I think my favorite thing about it is that it doesn’t have any harsh perfume scent to it. Just clean and refreshing! It is just what I need when wedding planning has kept me up all night and I only get 4 hours of sleep!”

spring cleaning: makeup bag.

In the spirit of spring cleaning, and inspired by this on the Glitter Guide, I decided to clean out my makeup bag this week. Things needed tossing, replacing…and it was a good excuse to do a little shopping.

First, the bag: J gave me this Tory Burch makeup bag five years ago, and I’ve been faithful to it ever since. It’s the perfect size for me, and I love how it stands up on its own.

L's Makeup Bag
full disclosure: i don’t think this has ever been zipped.

I’m a creature of habit when it comes to makeup. I wear the exact same products every day – too many choices stress me out! While I do keep a little box in my vanity for “special occasion makeup” (stuff I wear every now and then, like bright lipstick), my makeup bag is reserved for my everyday routine. Here’s what’s inside:

this is what it takes to make me look presentable.
it takes all of this to make me look presentable.

Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation in Nude. This formula has SPF and offers a good amount of coverage. Liquid foundation has a shelf life of one year, so I’ll need to replace this soon, even though it’s only half gone. The price is nice, so it’s totally fine.

Rimmel True Match Foundation
Rimmel True Match Liquid Foundation. {$8}

Gross, Disgusting Foundation Sponge. TOSS (and then REPLACE). I should know better. Makeup sponges should be replaced every month, and (ideally) should be washed every week.

Lancome Effacernes Waterproof Concealer. Er, I don’t even know how old this is. My mom gave it to me a year ago, so it’s definitely past its prime. But the consistency seems fine…do I have to toss it? According to this article, yes. Bummer.

Lancome Effacernes Concealer

I may replace it with this.

Origins Concealer
Origins Quick, Hide! concealer. {$16}

Laura Mercier Eye Shadow Primer in Linen. Same situation as the concealer – no clue how old it is.

Laura Mercier Eye Shadow Primer

That shade is kind of light for me, anyway. I may replace it with this:

Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer. {$20}

Franche Pressed Powder in Douce. FINALLY! Something I can keep. Pressed powder will last two years (and loose powder will last three). I have a love/hate relationship with pressed powder, so I don’t use a ton. This should be good for another year. I heard a rumor that this line has been discontinued…and my suspicions were confirmed when I tried to find a link to this product. At least I have another year to go!

Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer Pencil in Noir. KEEP. Ironically, the product with the longest shelf life (three years) is the one I go through the quickest! I love love love this eyeline, and it’s good thing it’s cheap because I go through a pencil every six months or so. I keep one in my purse for touch-ups, too.

Rimmel Eye Liner
Rimmel Exaggerate Eye Liner. {$6}

Diorshow Mascara in Black. KEEP, but not for long. Mascara only lasts three months, so I will have to replace this in a few weeks. My mom gave me this for Christmas (seriously, I wouldn’t have any makeup if it weren’t for her!), and I am in love. The brush is tiny, which took some getting used to…but now that I have the hang of it, my eyelashes seem to have doubled.

Diorshow Mascara.
Diorshow Mascara. {$25}

Rimmel Eyebrow Pencil in…brown? TOSS. This thing is so old that the words have rubbed off. I kinda think it may be the wrong color for me, anyway…but I do like the little brush on the cap. Handy!

Rimmel Eye Brow Pencil
Rimmel Eye Brow Pencil. {$4}

Rimmel Natural Bronzer in Sun Dance. Can you tell I’m a big Rimmel fan? I like this color a lot, but I hate the cheap plastic top. I wish it was a compact! J recommends Hoola Bronzer by Benefit, so I’m going to try it (even though I could use the Rimmel bronzer for another year or so). REPLACE.

Rimmel Bronzer

Rimmel GlamEyes Liquid Liner. Okay, this is one Rimmel product I don’t really love. The brush is kinda flimsy, so it’s hard to put on. I couldn’t find any guidelines about how long liquid liner goes, but I’m assuming it’s the same as mascara…so, TOSS. I don’t think I’ll replace though; I’m over the cat-eye thing. Are you?

Rimmel Glam Eyes Liquid Liner
Rimmel Glam Eyes Liquid Liner. {$6}

Sephora Blinged Eyeshadow Palette. This is an indulgence. It takes up a lot of real estate in my bag, but it holds EIGHT shadows and had a huge mirror on the inside. Good news: Eye shadows last for three years, so I can keep it! Thanks, mom.

Dr. Lipp Lip Balm. Lip Balm lasts forever (or until the consistency changes), but this tube has been squeezed to within an inch of its life after only a few months. J and I both use this fantastic, thick balm. I’m going to buy multiple replacements. I also had Fresh Sugar lip balm hiding in my bag – I’m going to keep that somewhere else (my car?), so I don’t have multiple lip balms in my bag.

Dr. Lipp Lip Balm
Dr. Lipp Lip Balm. {$14}

NYC Cityproof Gloss in Everlasting Blossom. I love this gloss so much that J gave me TWO tubes for Christmas this year. I must dispute NYC’s claim that this an “eight hour” gloss…but I love it anyway. I go through a tube every two months.

NYC City Proof Lip Gloss
i buy this many at a time. {$3}

Various Makeup Brushes. KEEP, but it’s time to wash them. I use this Sephora spray wash – just mist and wipe! No water necessary.

Whew! Are you going to clean out your makeup bag this spring? Tell us what you’re keeping and what you’re tossing on Twitter @glitter_blog_xo!

march ’13 birchbox.

My March Birchbox arrived last week, and I must say it was one of my favorites to date. I was beyond excited to try every product. Let’s get down to it, shall we?

March Birchbox
obsessed. with. everything.

1. Macadamia Natural Oil™ Deep Repair Masque: This product is *perfect* for thick, long hair like mine. Smells great and left my hair feeling silky smooth after one use. Recommend.

Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque
reconstruct strands from the inside out.

2. Macadamia Natural Oil™ Healing Oil Treatment: Want to cut your drying time and have soft, shiny hair? This product is for you! Mix with the Repair masque for ever more amazing results.

Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment
weightless moisture.

3. Madewell for Birchbox Nail Emery Board: It is well-documented that L and I are pretty obsessed with doing our nails, so you can image how psyched I was to see this super cute emery board in my box! Every girl needs a “purse file.”

Madewell for Birchbox Nail File
charming.

4. Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow: Y’all. I’ve sampled several BB creams since they became a trend, and I can honestly say this is the best. Goes on weightless and smooth, and leaves you with flawless skin. Just try it.

Marcelle BB Cream
hydrates and calms skin, evens tone, controls shine, lightly masks imperfections, and infuses skin with a fresh-from the-yoga-studio radiance.

5. Stella Cadente Miss Me Discrete? Eau de Toilette: This fresh-out-of-the-shower scent is really nice, but I wish it lasted longer.

Stella Cadente Miss Me Discrete? Eau de Toilette 50ml
La Vie En Rose.

6. Supergoop!® Endless Summer SPF 30+ Everyday UV Lotion: I had heard *great* things about Supergoop!, so I was uber-excited when it showed up in my Birchbox. The non-greasy formula has a high degree of photo-stability, which means that it can withstand strong solar rays. This is what I NEED for long days on the lake.

this is one sophisticated sunscreen.
