friday five: cinco edition.

We love a reason to celebrate, so we’re super excited that TWO fun things are going on this weekend: the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and Cinco de Mayo on Sunday. Read on for our tips for a fabulous, fun fiesta on Sunday…and stay tuned for our Friday Five: Derby Edition.

Cinco de Mayo

1. Party:  Cinco is on a Sunday, so keep it low key with a girl’s night at home. Courtney from Pizzazzerie put together LITERALLY the cutest fiesta we’ve ever seen. Loving the non-traditional colors!

2. Recipes: Courtney (love her) does it again with these four easy recipes your amigos are sure to enjoy this weekend. {Really obsessing over the prickly pear margarita…}

3. Outfit: Look. Just because it’s Cinco doesn’t mean you have to throw on a sombrero and call it a day. Get festive with these Mexican-inspired “Blanket” Mamie Ruth shorts from Dish.

4. Nails: Our FAVE West Coast reader, JFAV, has done it again with her holiday nails. Talk about ambitious– she brought the Mexican flag into play.

The Glitter Life CINCO Nails

5. 5K: Do the calorie math. Chances are you’ll consume a lot of beer and/or queso on Sunday. Boost your metabolism by running a 5K Saturday morning! Click here for a complete list of runs in Georgia this weekend. There are TONS to choose from.

friday five.

Happy Friday, glitter girls!

This week has been total madness. J has had a bazillion work meetings & tried to get to the gym in the interim; L has been doing everything from shipping orders to ordering inventory to hosting a trunk show (more on that next week!). So thank you, Friday, for showing up on time. We’re looking forward to putting our work aside and trying some new things this weekend! Here’s what we’re thinking:

1. Pop of Color: Spring is the perfect excuse to brighten your interior. Start small – pick a room and add a little “P.O.C.”, as Mr. Brad Goreski would say. We found five images to inspire you on The Glitter Guide. (And tune into It’s a Brad Brad World on Wednesdays at 10PM on Bravo. Love him.)

2. Nails: Ease into spring with a bright, fun mani! (And glitter, naturally.)

3. Fun Recipe: It will be warming up in Atlanta this weekend (finally). Sixty-five and sunny = patio lunch/dinner. So glad the Brown Eyed Baker is sharing ninety-five of her favorite spring recipes. Why not try 1, 5, or 10?

4. New Necklace: Speaking of a pop of color, why not shop for something to add a little pizazz to the basic chambray shirt you’ll be wearing all spring? 31 Bits is a socially-minded jewelry business giving women in Northern Uganda an opportunity to counter poverty by making jewelry. The “beads” on these beautiful necklaces are handmade using recycled paper. Thanks to 31 Bits, these women who make these necklaces now have access to English lessons, finance training, AIDS and health training, and more. We can’t think of a better way to update your wardrobe.

5. Recover: Cold temps and whipping wind can do a number on your locks. This weekend, get your hair back in business with the Winter’s Grasp Dry Scalp Mask from Homemade Living: Home Dairy with Ashley English. You can thank us later.

friday five: super bowl edition.

Wait, is there a football game on Sunday?

Girls, we can’t lie. We are BUMMED that our beloved Atlanta Falcons won’t be taking the field on Sunday. We do love a party though, so we’re making the most of it and planning to take part in the Super Bowl festivities anyway. Whether you’re invited to a party or hosting your own, today’s Friday Five is here to inspire you.

1. Classic Appetizers. If you’re a guest, show up in a party mood and bring an appetizer. We love apps that introduce new twists on old favorites. Here are our picks:

Cheese Twists.

Cheese Twists
These are EASY (but do budget yourself an extra 30 minutes for them to chill before baking) and will impress every guy in the room. image: martha stewart.

Fried Olives.

Fried Olives
these will be the talk of the party! the frying is really NBD. image: martha stewart.

2. Sliders. If you’re the host, ask guests to bring appetizers while you take responsibility for the main course. Chili is a Super Bowl party staple, but why don’t you get creative and serve sliders? They’re a little more work, but they’re cute, easy to grab, and don’t require silverware. Buzzfeed lists thirty slider recipes (some ridiculous, most delicious). Enlist a friend or two to help you assemble them.

Pulled Pork Sliders

3. Drinks. Goodness knows J loves a theme party. Check out these football-inspired beverage ideas. Cheesy? Yes. Fun? ABSOLUTELY.

Midori Cocktail

4. Drinking Game. Timeouts. Commercials. Half time. The Super Bowl just lends itself to drinking games, right? Check out these (hilarious) suggestions from nerdscholar.

Beyonce Halftime Show
Beyonce will be singing (for reals?) at the halftime show.

5. Dress Code. No wardrobe malfunctions this year, ladies. Ditch the jersey and show your team spirit with a fun pair of colored denim!

black friday cookies.

Black Friday Cookies
how delicious do these look!?

Happy Black Friday, glitter girls! We know some of you have been up since the *crack* of dawn. Let’s re-fuel with these delicious cookies shall we?

Chewy Gooey Flourless Chocolate Cookies

Yield: 24 cookies

Prep Time: 25 min

Cook Time: 14 min

Nicknamed “Black Friday Cookies,” these treats can be mixed up and baked rather quickly to enjoy after a long day of shopping on Black Friday.

Ingredients:

3 cups powdered sugar
2/3 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 to 4 large egg whites, at room temperature
1 Tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups bittersweet chocolate chips

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper (or silpat mats). If you use parchment paper, give it a light swoosh of nonstick spray.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together powdered sugar with cocoa powder and salt. Whisk in egg whites (start w/ just two) and vanilla extract and beat just until the batter is moistened. You’re looking for a brownie-like, thick and fudgy batter consistency. If it seems too thick, add another egg white– then a 4th one if it still seems too thick. Gently stir in chocolate chips.

3. Spoon batter onto the prepared baking sheets in 12 evenly spaced mounds per cookie sheet. I like to use a spring-release cookie scoop. Bake about 14 minutes, until the tops are glossy and lightly cracked. Slide the parchment paper (with the cookies) onto wire racks. Let cookies cool completely, and store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Tips:

*If you’re baking this as a “gluten-free” recipe, just make sure that the brand of chocolate chips you are using is gluten free.
*Let the cookies cool completely before you attempt to remove them from the mat or the parchment. They’re delicate, so gently peeling the paper away from the cookie works best.

Alright, glitter girls…the countdown has begun. Is your route planned out? Coupons and secret codes at the ready? Shopping list in hand?

Great! Sounds like you’re ready for Black Friday. Make sure you’re fueled for the most important shopping day of the year with these easy, make-ahead energy bars from Quick Dish.

Black Friday Energy Bar
it’s Black Friday. it’s hardcore shopping. today is your day.

Ingredients

  • 1 packet Betty Crocker Oatmeal Cookie Mix
  • 1/2 cup butter OR coconut oil, softened
  • 1  egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup dried blueberries
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/4 cup dried golden raisins
  • 1 cup cinnamon chips OR white chocolate chips, melted

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cookie mix, butter or oil, egg, and water. Mix together until a thick dough forms.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients (except the cinnamon chips). Mix well.
  4. Press the dough into an 9×11″ pan which has been generously greased and floured. Bake in preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the cookies are completely baked through and the edges are deep golden brown.
  5. Cool completely before turning the pan out onto a clean wooden cutting board. Slice all the edges off with a sharp knife, then cut the remaining pieces into 9-12 large rectangles.
  6. Place the melted cinnamon or white chocolate chips into a zip-top baggie. Snip the corner from the bag, then pipe a drizzle of the melted chips over the top of each rectangle. Allow to harden before storing.
  7. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days. Eat on the go for extra energy and enjoy!

Bring your A game this Black Friday.

Happy Sunday, glitter girls!

We hope all of you had a fantastic week full of Halloween festivities. We did, and we are recovering today. Check out our wrap-up.

L’s Week:

Got the most amazing birthday gift ever from J on Monday! Had a blast celebrating my birthday with friends on Tuesday night. Joe and I spent Halloween night with some good friends and their kids. Baby Joe charmed us all in his awesome hamburger costume (sadly, no pic of that). Spent our Friday night cooking up ribs for a tailgating segment on local TV…
