fall bar cart update.

Time for a seasonal bar cart refresh! Thanksgiving will be here in exactly two weeks, and I’m in the process of fall-ifying my bar set-up. My sweet friend Kate (a super talented gift-giver who always knows exactly what I want!) gave me some adorable cocktail napkins from Target for my birthday, and those inspired me to nose around for a few more fall pretties. Look what I found at Target!

Turn up the beet – I DIE! Mini-metallic pumpkins and acorns will look so cute scattered around my cart. And I love those orange napkin rings – just the thing to pretty up a fall table. Share your fall finds with us by tagging us on Insta! xo

fall, y’all.

It’s official. We live for Fall. Fall weather. Fall fashion. Fall recipes. Fall events. We love it ALL. (PS have you seen the Oh Joy Fall Collection for Target? Pretty much purchased everything on the list.)

What’s a new season without a signature cocktail? Here it is girls:

Happy Halloween, Glitter Goblins!

It is well documented that we are sort of obsessed with any recipes containing pumpkin (here and here). In honor of Halloween, here a few more pumpkin recipes for you to try.

Pumpkin Spice Latte. Try your hand at the barista thing and make your own caffeinated treat. It’s actually easier than we thought it would be! This recipe, courtesy of the super-cute blog Recipe Girl, shows you how.

Pumpkin Chocolate Cheesecake Bars. We like pumpkin, we like chocolate, and we like cheesecake. This recipe had us at hello.

The Glitter Life Pumpkin Bars

Pumpkin Soup. There are a zillion pumpkin soup recipes out there, and almost all of them are good. (You really can’t mess up pumpkin soup). We like this recipe because it’s super, super easy. Substitute vegetable broth for the chicken broth if you want a vegetarian soup.

Pumpkin Shrimp Bruschetta. We love pumpkin’s versatility. It works just as well in savory dishes (like pumpkin mac and cheese) as it does in desserts. We never really considered it for an appetizer, though…until we saw this recipe. The shrimp definitely make this app more substantial…but it’s just as tasty (and easier to eat) without it.

pumpkin chocolate chip bars.

We love the blog Two Peas and Their Pod. It’s one of the first places we go for recipe inspiration. The recipes are simple, straightforward, and packed with flavor. We’re totally making these Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bars for our next fall get-together:

 Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bars

What You Need:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice (don’t have any? learn how to make a substitute here.)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 package (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

What You Do:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  • With a stand or electric mixer, cream butter and sugar on medium-high speed until smooth; beat in egg and vanilla until combined. Add pumpkin puree and mix well. The mixture will look somewhat curdled. Reduce speed to low, and mix in dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Spread batter evenly in prepared pan. Bake bars for 35-40 minutes or until edges begin to pull away from sides of pan and a toothpick inserted in center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached.
  • Cool bars completely in pan. Cut into squares and serve. Yields 24 bars.

Happy Friday, glitter girls!

The Glitter Life is about fashion, makeup, design, cocktails…but most of all it’s about the friendship of two girls (that’s us) who, despite no longer living in the same town (wah!), manage to talk all day, every day about everything. What color should I paint my nails this weekend? Do I need pink pants? My desk is ugly–what should I do? Honestly, our posts are really just summaries of our random conversations on any given day.

One of the best parts of our Glitter Life experience is discovering other bloggers. Every now and then we “meet” someone new that we can totally see ourselves being BFF with. One of our faves is Kelly of Austen Hill. We love her traditional-with-a-twist style, and seriously, the girl is always up for a wine tasting. She’s cute and funny and we are totally going to meet up with her in Atlanta soon. She promised! Austen Hill

Today, we are swapping posts with Kelly. You know, bloggers helping each other out and stuff.  So read down for Kelly’s take on the Friday Five...and then visit Austen Hill to read her other posts AND see our own Glitter Life Friday Five guest post. C’mon, you know this is the best day of the week. Take it away, Kelly!

Hello, lovely to meet the fabulous readers of The Glitter Life! It’s Kelly from Austen Hill and I am absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to be a guest on this fantastic blog. I am a huge fan of Jennifer and Laura! Not only are they super sweet, but they have flawless taste and I always know I can count on their recommendations.

Like you, I follow The Glitter Life all week but I especially look forward to Friday Fives! J + L never fail to give me great ideas for a little weekend fun and highlight awesome finds. When they asked me to do a Friday Five post {a la Austen Hill} I jumped at the chance.

I’m happy to report this week has been pretty darn good! For my day job travel is the norm, but luckily this week I was able to stay close to home. This weekend I’m hoping to enjoy the amazing fall weather, start decorating for my annual Halloween Party, and most importantly have some fun! Read on for more of my Friday Five picks and don’t forget to check out J + L’s Friday post on my blog.

1. Wine Festivals

If you read my blog you’ll notice that I consider wine a food group. Luckily I live in Virginia where wineries are plentiful and wine festivals are a fall staple. Saturday I’m pouring for my friends {Cooper Vineyards} at a local festival. You can find out more about Cooper and other Virginia Wines here.

I love outdoor festivals but they can present some wardrobe challenges as they tend to go on rain or shine, freezing or sweltering. I’ve put together a fun look that will ensure you’re comfortable but still look put together while you’re braving the elements this weekend.

Fall Wine Festival

I’m mildly obsessed with J. Crew so I can’t leave without dropping a line about their new on-line factory store, check it out here!

2. Fall/Winter Skin Care

If I don’t take precautions, a negative effect of all of this outdoor, wine-drinking awesomeness can be dry skin and sunburn. To protect my skin during the fall/winter months my go-to line is Kiehl’s. Their products are gentle but affective and they absolutely work!

Kiehls Faves

Some of my favorites include:

  1. Midnight Recovery Concentrate: A little goes a long way and it smells amazing!
  2. Ultra Facial Cream: Lightweight 24-hour moisture
  3. Lip Balm #1: Never leave home without it
  4. Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+: Trust me you can absolutely wear this under make-up

3. Pumpkin Pancakes

I love to savor flavors when they’re in season so right now I’m on a pumpkin kick! This recipe for Pumpkin Pancakes from Martha Stewart looks yummy and easy {two of my favorite things}. Sunday morning I predict you’ll find me tucked under a blanket with a plate of these babies and some strong coffee.

4. DIY Halloween Fascinator

I’m a self-professed Anglophile, so you’ll hardly be surprised to find I’m a Royals junkie and that I adore Kate Middleton’s style. Fascinators are back in a big way because of the “Middleton Effect” and what better way to look chic on Halloween?! I came across this DIY Halloween Fascinator from the always amazing Fabulous K, so I think my weekend DIY project is set! Can’t wait to wear this at my Halloween Party! Pinterest has tons of other fun options like the one below or be creative and come up with an entirely new design on your own.

5. Take Charge of Your Health

Through my day job I have the privilege of knowing Lindsay Avner, an amazing woman and the founder of Bright Pink, a non-profit organization that focuses on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women. Read Lindsay’s story here.

Lindsay Avner

While these types of cancers are far less common in young women, they do tend to be linked within families. Knowing your families medical history is crucial to assessing your risk factors for these types of cancers. Visit Bright Pink’s website here for valuable information and resources. October is breast cancer awareness month so I challenge you to take control of your health and Be Brilliant, Be Bold, Be Bright Pink!

Have a wonderful weekend and don’t forget to visit Austen Hill here and follow me on Twitter @AustenHill and Facebook!

SEE?! We knew you would love Kelly. Hope yall have a fantastic weekend!

P.S. We are totally making that fascinator.

1. Sophisticated Pumpkins. The cute blog Feeling Lovesome has inspired us to go beyond the standard carved pumpkin (ours never looked that great anyway).  We’re totally going to try this chevron pumpkin–we’ll report back later in the month!
