our favorites: summer beauty essentials.

We’re headed to Atlanta market on Friday to buy for Fall/Winter 15 (be sure to follow us on Instagram @glitter_blog_xo for sneak peeks and behind the scenes pics!), and afterwards we’re headed to Lake Oconee for a quick weekend getaway. Here are the seven things we never leave home without this time of year.

Summer Beauty Essentials

1 // Pale blue is THE nail polish color for summer 15 (we know you know this). L scooped Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Blue Away ($2.97 WHAT) the other day, and this polish brand just might make us abandon Essie forever. It dries super-fast and has an extra-wide brush for even coverage (and also a dumb name, but we can forgive that). We also love the Double Duty Top Coat.

2 // We both have wavy hair, and we like to experiment with sea salt spray to up the texture factor.  We like this one by Josie Maran, but different hair types need different sea salt sprays. This handy article will guide you to the right one for your hair.

3 // A sweaty face is not cute. These blotting papers by Tarte get rave reviews.

4 // Our friend Christa  is something of a lipstick savant. Coral Crush by Maybelline is her pick for summer – in her words, it’s “not very bright but super pigmented.” View other great options here.

5 // This natural-looking self tanning spray by L’Oreal is a year-round beauty essential. It’s honestly pretty goof-proof – just be sure to prep your skin before you apply. We graduate from the “medium” shade to the “dark” shade in the summer.

6 // Our favorite volume-boosting dry shampoo. Because washing, drying and styling your hair in the summer heat is straight misery. L has been known to go for a WEEK between shampoos using this. Really.

7 // Fedora – Despite our best ninja moves with dry shampoo and sea salt spray, sometimes the only answer to summer hair is a fedora. Throw it on and don’t look back.

april ’14 birchbox.

Hi Girls Hi! Excited to share my April Birchbox goods with you. There’s nothing better than seeing this gem show up on my doorstep every month:

Kind Bars: Maple Pumpkin Seeds with Sea Salt: I immediately ordered a case of these after trying. It’s the perfect mix of sweet + salty.

Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo: Less than ideal for brunettes as the spray is super white, but I did enjoy the smell. Blondes, this is all you.

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner: So amazing. Will absolutely be purchasing when I run out. Glides on super smooth and how precious is the packaging!? I’m a sucker for gold dots…

theBalm “How Bout Them Apples”: This lip cream is the pop of color you’ve been looking for. BONUS: it really lasts.

Nyakio Coffee Face Polish | Body Scrub | Face Oil: Honesty is the best policy… These products really made me break out. With that said, I understand everyone’s skin is different! But for me, it didn’t work. I don’t need to stray from my dermalogica routine. A++.

the hair diaries.

Y’all know we are in favor of any product or technique that reduces the number of times we have to wash our hair per week. Daily shampooing is BAD for your hair, not to mention a total time-suck. And we like to spend as few minutes getting ready as possible.

We have become experts at stretching our time between washes. Here, five days of hair styles, sans shampoo.

Day 1 – Smooth blow out

friday five: mother’s day.

Where would we be without Mom? Show her some love with these five great gifts. And since these are all gifts we’d love to receive ourselves…Moms, feel free to leave your laptops open to this post. HINT, HINT, Significant Others.

1. Blow Out: Treat Mom to a glamorous Dry Bar experience. Even better, make her blow-out last with this gift set. It includes a blow-out gift coaster, Detox Dry Shampoo and {everyone’s fave} Morning After Shower Cap.

2. Homemade Brunch: A reservation isn’t easy to come by on Mother’s Day. If you’re in the same city as Mom, cook her brunch at home (hers or yours) instead! L loves these foolproof recipes: Mushroom Spinach Frittata (EASY) and Cheddar Cheese Grits Casserole (EASIER). Both recipes are forgiving and open to interpretation. Add a little bacon to the frittata; add a little cayenne to the grits casserole. If Mom is a foodie (and you’re up for something fancier), try a delicious Roasted Asparagus & Goat Cheese Frittata. Bon appetit!

3. A Little Shopping: Tons of stores are celebrating Mother’s Day with mom-daughter shopping events. L’s boutiques Social and Dish are hosting MOMS + Mimosas this Saturday, May 11. Swing in with Mom, for Mom, or for yourself and enjoy 25% off any item. Not in Statesboro? Use promo code MOM13 to save on www.shopsocialdish.com.

4. DIY Gift: Our girl Lauren Conrad has a knack for cute crafts that score low on the frustration scale. All you need for an adorable Mother’s Day gift is a white coffee mug (or other dish) and a gold paint pen. So get creative! Spoiler alert: L made one of these for her mom, her mother-in-law, and herself.

so easy. so cute.

so easy. so cute.

5. Give back. Mother’s Day is an opportunity to thank the woman who gave you life. It’s also a chance to honor women around the world who are overcoming adversity.  There are so many options. Buy matching bracelets from 31 Bits for you and Mom – the proceeds help equip Ugandan women with literacy education, financial and vocational training, holistic care, and strong support systems. Or clean out your closets together and donate your gently used workwear to a local charity like Dress for Success, which has affiliates all over the United States. Do some research and choose a cause that resonates with you both. Mom will be so proud.

up-dos.

J and I both love an up-do. Especially on Day 4 (don’t tell us you’re washing your hair every day!). On Sunday, overwhelmed with 1) dirty hair and 2) about five minutes to get ready, I threw my hair in a French twist…which looked pretty good. It got me thinking about other (easy) up-dos to try.

Here are some of my faves:

Love this side-swept French Twist – use a teasing comb and dry shampoo to achieve this look. Leave your top layers (or bangs) out for a looser look. Bobby pin them near your ear if they’re too long.

Up Do #1

kate upton.

The side bun is THE up-do of the season (even though there’s not a lot of “up” to it). Curl your hair with a curling iron, gather your hair in a deep side part, and twist the curls into a knot covering the opposite ear from your part. Use bobby pins to pin the knot in place.

Up Do #2

jessica lu.

A high bun is easy for the up-do novice. Gather your hair in a high half-pony (don’t pull it all the way through). Twist the ends around the knot and secure with bobby pins. Unlike the first two looks, this one should be clean and crisp. Smooth your whispies with hairspray, and make sure the hair underneath the bun is smooth.

Up-Do #3

lauren conrad.

And here’s a mini-tutorial for an up-do perfect for short or medium-length hair. Twist one side across the back and secure with bobby pins. Ditto for the other side, pinning the ends opposite the first side. Voila!

Quick Twist

easy.

how to: pack for a quick trip.

Happy Tuesday, glitter girls!

We’re headed back to Las Vegas this afternoon for a quick trip to the MAGIC tradeshow. We’ll land tonight, work all day Wednesday, and head home to Atlanta on the red-eye late Wednesday night. We’re packing light this time. Our plan:

Tuesday: Meetings + Flight

We both have meetings Tuesday morning (including a vanity necessary stop at DryBar) before our flight leaves, so we can’t just schlub it. Skinny jeans and vests will do us right and take us all the way to LV.

Skinny Jean + Lace Tee + Fur Vest

Tuesday Night: Drinks

Once we get to Vegas, I’ll keep the fur vest but swap the skinnies for leather shorts, the lace tee for a flowy top, and the boots for heels. Once key to packing light is to wear your bulkiest items on the plane. For me, that’s the fur vest and boots.

Fur Vest + Leather Shorts + Heels

L’s leather shorts are black, but you get the idea…image: wendy’s look book.

Wednesday: Tradeshow + Industry Happy Hour + Dinner + Flight

We always fight the urge to dress like twins when we’re together–our brains work the same way, so it’s tough! We’ll both be wearing versions of this cute, layered outfit for the tradeshow, happy hour at BCBG, one of our fave vendors, dinner and flight home late Wednesday night.

The Packing List:

skinnys // lace tee // fur vest // scarf // pashmina (for the plane) // black leather shorts // peachy flowy top // nude heels // black leggings // oversize tunic // gray suede boots // leather jacket // striped tee and extra sweater (you never know!) // curling iron //dry shampoo // notebooks and office supplies // phone charger

The Luggage:

We both have a version of the same Coach duffle, which is no longer available. This is probably the swan song for L’s duffle, though–ten years of weekly trips have taken their toll. Any suggestions for a replacement purchase?

The Manicure:

We’re both wearing Essie Sand Tropez, a perfectly neutral shade that won’t show chips during our whirlwind trip.

Essie Sand Tropez

essie sand tropez is our go-to shade for travel.

We’ll post pics of our trip (and our outfits!) on Friday. Until then, be sure to follow our twitter feed @glitter_blog_xo for behind-the-scenes pics of MAGIC.

friday five.

Happy Friday, ladies!

So, we basically blinked and the holidays are here. And you know what that means (besides family drama)…TRAVEL. L and I are seasoned road warriors, and we’re sharing our top five travel essentials on today’s Friday Five.

1. Dry Shampoo: Sitting in a car/plane for hours on end can make your hair feel totally flat and/or greasy. Liven up your locks with Psssssst Instant Spray Shampoo. Hair looks, feels and smells freshly shampooed without water. Easy.

Pssssst Dry Shampoo

they started the trend and pssssst it works.

2. Moisturizer: When winter weather leaves our faces feeling dry and chapped, we rely on Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Perfecting Water Moisture Mist. Not sure what is in this “water,” but our skin loves it! Skin looks hydrated and softened with the first use. This product is *key* when traveling.

Laura Mercier Moisturizer

the results are totally worth the extra $.

3. All-In-One Products: It’s one thing to spread all your stuff out on your own bathroom counter (JENNY), but the holidays often mean sharing cramped quarters. L really loves this Garnier Ultimate Cleanser–it doubles as an exfoliating scrub (scrub your face for two minutes) and *triples* as a purifying mask (leave it on for five minutes). You basically get an entire face cleaning arsenal in one tube. We’re all about multi-tasking.

Garnier Ultimate Cleanser

ultimate is right.

4. Flats: How in the world are some of these ladies running around the airport in 5” stilettos!? Tone it down with some cute and comfortable flats, okay?

Sole Society Flats

the ‘Peony’ flat by Sole Society is perfection. glitter on your feet? we approve.

Ferragamo Varina Flats

if you’re splurging, the Ferragamo “Varina” Flat is where you need to be. they’re classic and GORG!

5. Travel Pouch: Don’t stash your luxe travel products in a boring ziplock bag. We suggest Kate Spade:

Kate Spade Pouch

well. that’s pretty on point.

Kate Spade Glitterball

EEEE glitter pouch! SOLD.

*Don’t forget your phone/iPad/laptop chargers! We’ve been guilty of that too many times to count.*

And speaking of travel, L and I are reuniting in Athens this weekend for the University of Georgia/Georgia Southern football game. One or both of us will probably end up painting our nails in public. It’s a tradition. Hope you are as excited as we are for the weekend!
