friday five | food diary.

Friday. You are back. And we love you.

If you’re like us, you’re always looking for new restaurants to try over the weekend. Need suggestions in Atlanta? Look no further.

1. C&S Seafood + Oyster Bar: J took cover here Monday night during a legit monsoon and stumbled upon one of the most delicious shrimp cocktails (and actual cocktails) ever.

2. Joey D’s Oak Room: We’ve suggested them before. For a reason. If you’re looking for really GREAT food every visit, Joey D’s is your spot. I mean how delicious does that sandwich look?

3. Home grown GA: Homegrown came HIGHLY recommended by J’s coworker, Bill, mainly because of their award winning sloppy joe. The best part is that the sloppy joe is… wait for it… VEGAN. And amazingly delicious.

4. American Food + Beverage: L and I gave this new Buckhead Atlanta spot a try when she was in town a few weeks ago. LOVE it. Going in for round 2 tonight with some girlfriends. Boiled peanut hummus is definitely on the agenda.

i promise to get a great photo of this tonight, but in the meantime one from @ATLFoodSnob.

5. Turner Field: Okay so this may not be a restaurant BUT the Braves are playing the Cubs in Atlanta this weekend. Take in the game. Share some patriotic dippin dots with your love, but not the wine of course.

J:

Mercy mercy mercy. Friday is finally HERE.

I’ve been sifting through recent iPhone photos and realized I’ve been hoarding #foodpics and resto recommendations. For shame. Let’s catch up, shall we?

The Silver Moon | Lake Oconee: L and I had a girls getaway at Lake Oconee a few weeks ago and shared the most delicious fresh shrimp. It was photo-worthy obviously.

*Note: You may have trouble finding this gem of a restaurant because their sign simply says “Bar and Grill” so keep an eye out.

JCT Kitchen & Bar | Atlanta: You probably saw this gorgeous sight on our instagram page, but I had to give more info because it was THAT good. Steak tartare with a side of fried corn on the cobb. {not pictured MOMO sauvignon blanc}

Joey D’s Oak Room | Atlanta: Keeping with the steak theme… Sometimes a great steak is exactly what you’re looking for. Look no further than Joey D’s Oak Room! Conveniently located across from Perimeter Mall with a bar you MUST see to believe.

Gino’s East Pizzeria | Chicago: After dining here on my last two trips to Chicago, I definitely need to share the best deep dish in town. Gino’s East is exactly what they say it is… legendary. Can’t make it to Chicago? Gino’s will ship a pie directly to your door. #dangerous

Smith & Wollensky | Chicago: Exactly what a crab cake should be… crab. To die for. And highly recommend dining al fresco.

recipe: mussels magnifico.

Okay, so…we haven’t been cooking NEARLY as much as we used to/should be. Life is crazy busy, etc etc. Which means that when we DO get a chance to relax and cook a meal, we are super proud of ourselves get excited and want to share the recipes with you.

Last weekend, L made Mussels Magnifico for the Joes. Don’t be intimidated – this recipe is super easy and quick. And also the perfect excuse to open a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. Not that we needed one.

Mussels Magnifico

What You Need:

  • 2 pounds mussels (we used frozen, vacuum-packed mussels – don’t judge us, they’re stupid easy)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 6  cloves garlic, chopped (we really, really love garlic – if you don’t, you can use less)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste (we like Cento brand, in the tube – give it one epic squeeze)
  • 1 large tomato, diced, with skin on (or use 3 Roma tomatoes)
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons parsley
  • 1 cup Sauvignon Blanc or other dry white wine of your choice (check out Wine Folly for advice on pairings)
  • Lemon slices
  • 1 loaf crusty bread

What you do:

  • Heat oil in a large pan. Add onion and saute until golden. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the remaining ingredients, except the mussels. Bring to a simmer. Stir well and adjust seasoning if necessary. Cover.
  • In the meantime, bring water to a boil in large pot. When water is boiling, add mussels (in bag, in our case) and cook for 7 minutes.
  • Divide mussels among four plates. Spoon sauce over each and serve with crusty bread.

And….magnifico! Right?
