stillhouse atlanta.

Last week, Jay and J were excited to try a restaurant that opened recently near their house in the Andrews Entertainment District. Stillhouse Craft Burgers and Moonshine is a gem located downstairs next to Cellar 56 Wine Bar. Jay was particularly excited to give them a try–moonshine really takes him back to his University of Kentucky roots. Let us break it down for you:

Cocktails: J started with the Blood Red Moon Margarita {fresh lime juice, agave nectar, blood orange liqueur, and Troy & Sons Platinum shine}, and Jay had CatDaddy Moonshine smoked with apple. Instant fans of both.

Main Course: Their burgers are served with an inverted top bun. Why, you ask? How often do you remove your burger bun to add condiments? Every. Time. They take care of this step for you. So courteous.

Sides: The burger is absolutely plenty to fill you up. 100%. BUT, being the mac & cheese connoisseur J is, she had to give theirs a try. It lives up to the “spicy” in its name and was the perfect compliment to the meal.

Dessert: J’s never one to pass on dessert. Especially when the words Krispy and Kreme are involved. Donut fans, this bread pudding is to die for.

friday five: weekend getaway.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

We’re heading to Lake Oconee this afternoon for a MUCH needed weekend together. Here’s what the next 48 hours look like for us.

1. Cocktail: No boring wine glasses for us this weekend! L is bringing mason jars and paper straws to hold our cocktails. Stay tuned to see if we use J’s sparklers.

The Glitter Life Mason Jar

2. Appetizer: As J was cruising pinterest looking for an app to make for us this weekend, she came across this alternative to a full caprese salad. Easy to transport and perfect for us to munch on while getting ready. We had to graduate from Goldfish some time.

The Glitter Life Caprese Salad
so easy, colorful and cute.

3. Pool Accessory: Everyone. Cross your fingers and toes that the rain holds out long enough to give us a pool day. We need it. And also this Sunnylife San Remo Beach Towel for lounging.

weekend wrap-up + glitter girl: melanie herrington.

We’re a little late on our weekend wrap-up…we blame a manic, manic Monday. Here’s what we were up to:

J: Had a R&D session with my boss/coworkers on Friday at Chuy’s. Saturday, Jay and I headed to our home away from home, Lake Oconee, for a relaxing evening. Sunday we got in a little golf (even though it was frigid) and enjoyed a cocktail at Fado.

Weekend Collage
friday, saturday, sunday

L: Did a little cooking and experimented with up-dos (both will be on the blog this week!), had a mini-photo shoot, enjoyed a date night with Joe, and finished the weekend with a good friend and glass of wine at home.

And now, for this week’s Glitter Girl, Melanie Herrington.

About Melanie: Mel is an artist extraordinaire and stay-at-home mom to three adorable girls. She’s got city-girl tastes but lives in the small town of Dublin, Georgia. We love her style and couldn’t wait to share her with you!

1. What item or accessory do you wear the most?

Besides wearing a side braid almost each and every day, my most-worn staple would be my drop-hook diamond earrings.  My grandmother gave these to me before she passed and they have proved to be a classic pair!  Since they have no post, they are a comfy to sleep in, too.
2. What are your three favorite stores (for ANYTHING, on line or bricks and mortar)?
Etsy is my number one favorite store-if you can call it that.  I love that the stores on Etsy are filled with unique finds made by unique artisans.  This site brings a hand thrown bowl made by a potter in Oregon directly to my doorstep. I like that!  Check out these super finds:
Blood Orange Lip Balm. 100% Natural Lip Balm. Vegan. Shea Butter.
Fun Abstract Aztec Tribal Inspired Pattern Art Block Print 5 x 7 Home Decor / Gold / Hand Pulled Linocut / Gift
little love notes teeny tiny note cards
Pottery Bowl - Seafoam Green Dot Bowl with Handle - Noodle Bowl
West Elm Market – Lately I just cant get enough. The utilitarian feel and the simplicity of the images in general keep me coming back for more. The clean look of the products and site is attractive for shopping and selecting the perfect piece for your home.  The spices, the sauces, the syrups, the appliances, the furniture, the cute little things–it is all so good.  Some of my faves are:
Krups Espresso Machine
Cake Kitchen Paper - Table Wrap
Spoonable Caramels
Labeled Kitchen Mixing Bowl Set
And last but not least…Hobby Lobby! I love a good craft store shopping trip. I find it hard to shop on-line for art or craft supplies unless I need something specific. One great thing about Hobby Lobby is their framing. Oh, their framing!  It is quick and reasonably priced, and therefore hard to pass up. Dont forget your 40% off coupon!
3. Fill in the blank. You would die if ____ followed you on Twitter.
What is twitter? We may have to change this question. Apparently none of our friends tweet as much as we do.
4. Your last meal. What is it?
Easy!  A goat bomb!  There is a small little Victorian on a side street in Savannah where The Starland Cafe lives.  This eatery makes the most delectable dishes.  One of these being a goat bomb.  It is piping hot bowl of tomato thai soup topped off with a gigantic dollop of goat cheese served with ciabatta bread wedges pressed and grilled.  Dip this bread in, swirl around and there you have it-all other food has lost its taste.

5. What’s your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is a monthly subscription to the Jones Design Company printable collection.  This guilty pleasure won’t break the bank–it’s less than ten buck-a-roos per month.  I look forward to the end of the month when I find an email from Jones Design with the new collection attached.  Every monthly collection differs slightly.  I thoroughly enjoy these weekly calendar printouts, cute little shopping lists and a sometimes there is even a craft project to complete with the kiddos.  Check it out here.  It is worth the look.

Side braids, Hobby Lobby, goat bombs…so easy to see why we heart Mel. Hope you enjoyed her interview as much as we did! We’ll introduce you to another Glitter Girl next week. Dont forget to follow us on Instagram at @glitter_blog_xo.

caramelized onion and goat cheese tarts + glitter girl: mika kawana.

Happy Tuesday, glitter girls!

J and I capped off our busy weekend by watching (separately) the 2013 Academy Awards Sunday night. I didn’t have a full-blown Oscar watching party, but I did make a fun appetizer to celebrate. These tarts are the perfect small bite to pair with a glass of wine. The onions/goat cheese/thyme combo would also be delicious on toasted baguette slices.

Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese Tarts

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup white wine
  • 1 bunch fresh thyme, plus more for garnish
  • 1 puff pastry sheet, thawed (from a 17 oz. package frozen puff pastry sheets)
  • 1 log soft mild goat cheese, at room temperature

Method

  • Center a rack in the oven and preheat to 450 degrees.
  • In a heavy skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Saute onion, stirring occasionally, until golden (about 10 minutes).
  • Add wine and deglaze skillet, scraping up any brown bits.  Cook until water evaporates and onion is an even deeper brown (about 10 more minutes).
  • While onion is cooking, cut pastry sheet lengthwise into thirds. Cut each strip into 8 triangles.
  • Place triangles on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Prick pastry all over with a fork. Bake until golden (about 10 minutes). Slice each pastry in half to create two thinner tart bases.
  • Spread goat cheese onto pastry triangles. Top with caramelized onions.
  • Garnish with fresh thyme leaves and serve immediately.

Makes 48 tarts. Adapted from the March 2013 issue of InStyle magazine.

And now, for this week’s Glitter Girl. Once a week-ish, we plan to highlight one of our favorite friends/readers/fellow Glitter Girls with a pic and a brief questionnaire. We’ll feature girls who are living in interesting places (from Atlanta to Alaska) and doing interesting things (from stylish stay-at-home moms to corporate ladder-climbers). We hope you enjoy getting to know The Glitter Life community!

Let’s meet Mika Kawana!

About me: I’m a University of Georgia grad (like L!), fashion hound and political junkie. I’ve worked as the finance director of the Georgia Republican Party since 2007. I learned all of my meticulous tendencies as Laura’s intern in Governor Sonny Perdue’s office years ago. 🙂 And I use them every day as I shake people down at the GAGOP.

1. What item or accessory do you wear the most? My grandmother’s onyx ring.

2. What are your three favorite stores (for ANYTHING, online or bricks and mortar)? Social/Dish (that counts as one, right?), Arden’s Garden (hello…who doesn’t love wheatgrass? If you haven’t juiced before, you need to get on it), and World Market (they have great deals on wine and decorations).

3. Fill in the blank. You would die if ____ followed you on Twitter. Uhhh.  I don’t have a twitter account.  Maybe one day, I’ll jump on the bandwagon.

4. Your last meal. What is it? It’s Mexican.  It is always Mexican.

5. What’s your guilty pleasure? Massages at my sketchy foot massage place. It’s called Foot Massage. Fact. You can’t beat an hour massage and a 30 minute foot massage for $70.   If you live here in Atlanta, Foot Massage is located in the Pinetree shopping center on Buford Hwy.  Ask for May.

friday five: super bowl edition.

Wait, is there a football game on Sunday?

Girls, we can’t lie. We are BUMMED that our beloved Atlanta Falcons won’t be taking the field on Sunday. We do love a party though, so we’re making the most of it and planning to take part in the Super Bowl festivities anyway. Whether you’re invited to a party or hosting your own, today’s Friday Five is here to inspire you.

1. Classic Appetizers. If you’re a guest, show up in a party mood and bring an appetizer. We love apps that introduce new twists on old favorites. Here are our picks:

Fried Olives.

these will be the talk of the party! the frying is really NBD. image: martha stewart.

2. Sliders. If you’re the host, ask guests to bring appetizers while you take responsibility for the main course. Chili is a Super Bowl party staple, but why don’t you get creative and serve sliders? They’re a little more work, but they’re cute, easy to grab, and don’t require silverware. Buzzfeed lists thirty slider recipes (some ridiculous, most delicious). Enlist a friend or two to help you assemble them.

Fried Oyster Sliders
fried oyster sliders from Food Republic.
Reuben Sliders

Pulled Pork Sliders

3. Drinks. Goodness knows J loves a theme party. Check out these football-inspired beverage ideas. Cheesy? Yes. Fun? ABSOLUTELY.

score a touchdown with this cocktail shaker from amazon.com.
Midori Cocktail
get a kick out of this Midori cocktail from She Knows Food and Recipes.
Red/Purple Paper Straws

4. Drinking Game. Timeouts. Commercials. Half time. The Super Bowl just lends itself to drinking games, right? Check out these (hilarious) suggestions from nerdscholar.

Beyonce Halftime Show
Beyonce will be singing (for reals?) at the halftime show.

5. Dress Code. No wardrobe malfunctions this year, ladies. Ditch the jersey and show your team spirit with a fun pair of colored denim!

weekend wrap-up.

Happy Monday, glitter girls!

As always, the weekend wasn’t quite long enough. Here’s ours in pics:

J: It was so nice to finally have a weekend in town in Atlanta. Jay and I tried a new brunch place that recently opened across the street from our house called Buttermilk Kitchen. We went Saturday AND Sunday, so that should tell you something. Fantastic. Checked out the new Jake Gyllenhaal flick “End of Watch” at the new and improved AMC Phipps Plaza 14. Reclining seats and wine, y’all.

L: Not my finest weekend. My husband Joe and I were under the weather all week and weekend, and–for once–we didn’t do much of anything on Saturday and Sunday. I was able to accomplish a few things around the house, like decorating for Christmas and ordering my Christmas cards (rush delivery, GRRRR). I attended a fun ornament swap party Thursday night with a great group of girlfriends; it will have to count as my weekend fun pic. (The weekend technically starts on Thursday, right?)

friday five.

IT’S FRIDAY! And you know what that means… Here’s what we’re feeling this weekend, glitter girls:

Between the daily workplace grind, body-clock adjustment (or lack thereof) due to daylight savings time and election night craziness, we are SO looking forward to this weekend. As usual, we have a packed schedule…but we’re going to make time (somehow) for a little at-home pampering. Here’s what we’re planning:

1. DIY Face Mask: I mean we love the spa as much as any girls, but sometimes it’s just not possible in terms of schedule or budget. This easy facial treatment can be whipped up in two minutes flat, and we’re betting you already have these ingredients on hand. Fix a cucumber water, smear this on your face, and relax for a few minutes. Adapted from Beauty Banter

Honey/ Lemon Mask Recipe:
Squeeze 1/2 a lemon (organic is always better) into a bowl, add 2 tbsp of honey (organic, raw, natural if possible). Mix with a spoon until you reach a liquid consistency. Apply to a clean face, avoiding eye area. Make sure that your hair is pulled back away from your face, or you’ll end up with a sticky mess. Leave on for 15-20 min and rinse off.

Honey/Lemon Facial
two minutes to bliss.ith this mixture.

2. Spa-Grade Exfoliation: Follow your DIY face mask with a round of gentle exfoliation courtesy of this handy gadget.

Clarisonic
don’t forget to check out the different brush heads!

J and I have used Clarisonics for years (true story), and we are totally crushing on this leopard print version. It’s like a soothing, deep-cleaning spa-quality treatment…without the price.

3. Stress-Relieving Yoga: Whether you’ve had a rough week or just a rough Friday night, this super quick (only ten minutes!) video takes you through easy, gentle yoga poses designed to de-stress your mind and rejuvenate your body. Ommmmmmm.

4. Homemade Chai Tea Mix: Yeah, yeah we heart Starbucks…but sometimes it’s nice to whip up a comforting treat at home (in pajamas).  And by “whip up,” we mean throw something together with as little effort as possible. Try this easy DIY chai tea mix—just combine the ingredients and stir into a mug of hot water. This recipe makes 36 servings, so consider making up a batch and dividing into mason jars for your friends. Merry Christmas!

Chai Tea
ahhhhhhh.

5. Hair Treatment. Winter weather (not to mention heat styling) can turn your shiny mane dry and brittle. Winter, you are so CRUEL. Repair your hair with Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment. See and feel the difference after one use. Instant gratification. We love that.

Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment
weather-beaten hair is not cute, girls. fix it.

We’re both going to be ready for the spa when this weekend is over. J and Jay are playing house this weekend with Jay’s niece and nephews, and L is prepping for live TV tonight (AGAIN) and running walking in the True Blue 5K tomorrow morning with some friends. Oh, and it’s Georgia Southern homecoming this weekend–go Eagles!

Share your weekend pics/plans with us on Twitter @glitter_blog_xo. We wanna see!
