the goods.

Cotz SPF 40: I was super stoked to receive this right before Memorial Day fun in the sun! Even more excited that it’s super lightweight and leaves NO grease. A+.

Nexxus Color Assure Trio: Love trying new hair products. Upkeep on long, colored hair isn’t always easy. This Nexxus Color Assure line is just okay. I still much prefer my Moroccan Oil products.

32 Breath Crystals: So. Full disclosure. I haven’t tried these. And I’m thinking about giving them to my dog who could use them more than me. {kidding…}

Marcelle Power Serum: I have a really great skin regimen going on right now with my Dermalogica products, but I gave this serum a whirl. It’s good, but I feel like you would definitely have to buy a full size bottle to see if the results are what they claim.

Pixi Lip Balm: Love this fun pink shade! Give your pout a tint and moisturize at the same time. A win win all around.

belle de jour.

If you’re a regular Glitter Life reader, you know that we love fresh, blown out hair to start the weekend. Last week, J was invited to get a blow-out at Belle de Jour. Her report:

Belle de jour is a beautiful salon in Buckhead. Both males and females flock to this hidden gem off Roswell Road. Belle de Jour offers a wide variety of services including bridal party hair/makeup and lashes, but they pride themselves on their cut/color ability. My stylist, Vanessa Vinci, was absolutely wonderful. The salon now carries Oribe Luxury Hair Care products…and let me tell you, they did not disappoint. I fell in love with {and ultimately purchased} the soft lacquer styling spray.

If you’re looking for the perfect gift to give your girlfriends, Belle de Jour offers these adorable {see below} damask print bags that you can fill with buy 2, get 1 free makeup products! And if you’re working long hours, Belle de Jour is totally flexible as far as scheduling. We really like that kind of attitude.

April 2013 Birchbox.

Hi Glitter Girls!

This month’s Birchbox review is brought to you by our favorite nail artist and most loyal West Coast reader Jennifer Favela.

“So excited about April’s Birchbox! Let’s get into it!:

Atelier Cologne, Orange Sanguine.

I wasn’t too sure about this one just because I am not big on reeeeally citrus-y (that’s a word right?!) scents. But I was so wrong! It smells wonderful! And a big plus that I always look for in a scent? It lasts the whole day without needing to re-apply! Win-win right? This particular scent is very concentrated so you only need a little dab and you are good to go.

fresh, crisp, sweet.
fresh, crisp, sweet.

 Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate.

I LOVE anything Kiehl’s. AND since I am now in my last year of my 20’s (eek!) I have found myself starting to freak out about lines and wrinkles so I was so excited about this product. It is packed with vitamin C which apparently not only helps me kick colds to the curb but is great for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Yay!

pure vitamin c, ladies.

Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixer.

Okay, how did Birchbox know I wanted this?? As an avid flat-ironer, curling iron user, hair color-er, my hair is always in need of extra moisture! I may just have to purchase the full size on this one…

rejuvenate and hydrate. it is key.

Mirenesse Glossy Kiss.

Lipstick pencils are my new obsession and this one is awesome! It is a mix between a lip stain and a creamy balm. Mine came in the perfect shade of red (called, “Flirty Kiss”) and I can’t wait to wear it out this weekend during my mini-getaway to San Diego! It glides on SO smooth and feels very moisturizing. Bonus: it can double as a cheek stain! I don’t know if I would use red for my cheeks, but the pink color they make (“Cheeky Kiss”) would be adorbs! The one downside? It’s not very long lasting on the lips. BUT it is the perfect little skinny size to fit in my clutch for re-application throughout the night!

Simple Revitalizing Eye Roll-on

Not only is this an amazing product at a great price that you can pick up at your local drugstore, but it really works! I just swipe it under each eye, let it absorb and go on with my morning beauty routine! It reduces puffiness AND softens. I love how it rolls on smooth and I think my favorite thing about it is that it doesn’t have any harsh perfume scent to it. Just clean and refreshing! It is just what I need when wedding planning has kept me up all night and I only get 4 hours of sleep!”

guest post: home for the holidays.

Happy Thursday, glitter girls!

‘Tis the season for holiday travel…and all of the headaches that go with it. Lucky for you, honorary glitter girl Brooke Carney is a travel expert. She regularly flies from her home in Alaska back to Georgia, Florida and points in between. Girl makes it look easy. Today, she shares her top air-travel tips with us.

1. Carefully consider your travel outfit. Whether you’re going by plane, train or auto, this is one of the most important (yet most overlooked) decisions you can make. I like a maxi dress or skirt with a tank, sweater (like a blanket) and scarf (like another blanket) and boots. When I land in Atlanta, the bulky stuff goes in my luggage, the flip flops come out of the purse, and I’m ready for the south.

don’t forget your movie star shades.

2. Bring real books. I just picked up two from my favorite used book store–two best sellers for $4.50! As handy as a Nook or Kindle is, there’s something comforting about reading a real book, and holiday travelers need all the comfort we can get. Plus, I don’t have to stop reading when we get down to 10,000 feet. When I arrive at my destination, I pass the books along to family or donate them at the local library.

3. Load up your iPhone with calming music. I just put together a play list with Ray LaMontagne, Fleet Foxes, and old, slow country. Put your ear buds in and tune out the airport obnoxiousness.

4. Make a good layover plan. Mine involves a mani/pedi at Butter in the Seattle airport (there are nail salons in most major airports–do your research!), followed by a glass of wine at the airport bar near my gate. Getting my nails done on the run eliminates one thing from my pre-travel to-do list.

5. Pack an I-didn’t-just-get-off-the-red-eye kit. Airplanes are really drying, so be sure to hydrate during the flight. For a little extra help, I use cleansing towelettes to get the grime off, a cooling gel to de-puff my eyes, and dry shampoo to revive my hair. Remember to make sure that your products meet TSA guidelines!

choose products for sensitive skin even if yours isn’t. fewer chemicals, dyes and perfumes can’t be a bad thing.

diy lip balm.

Happy Thursday, glitter girls!

This post combines our love of DIY with our love/obsessive need for Chapstick.

Dry, cold winter weather is fast approaching, and you know what that means: CHAPPED LIPS. Don’t give in, girls! Keep your lips soft with this DIY balm you can make at home. #crafty

*Glitter Tip: Wear old clothes when you make this. Getting wax out of clothing is a total nightmare.*

DIY LIp Balm

Cocoa Butter and Vanilla Lip Balm

  • 3 tbsp. pure cocoa butter
  • 1/2 c. olive oil or sweet almond oil
  • 4 tbsp. beeswax
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 1 vitamin E capsule
  • 5-8 drops of pure vanilla essential oil
  1. Use a double-boiler on the stove to melt the beeswax.  If you don’t have a double-boiler (or a stove!) you can put the beeswax in a glass, microwave-safe container and heat it in the microwave slowly, taking it out and stirring every 25-35 seconds.
  2. Once the wax is melted add the room-temperature cocoa butter and sweet almond oil.  Continue to slowly heat the mixture until the cocoa butter is melted, stirring often.
  3. Add the honey and the vanilla essential oil.  Then pierce a vitamin E capsule and squeeze the contents into the mixture.
  4. Remove the mixture from the stove and pour into individual containers.  Allow your new lip balm to cool for 1-2 hours before use.

If you’d like your lip balm to be a bit more glossy, you can add a little more olive/sweet almond oil but if you prefer a more matte finish, add more beeswax.

Let us know how yours turns out! Tweet pics to @glitter_blog_xo

hair's the scoop.

We are no stranger to hair products here at The Glitter Life. Laura and I have put a *serious* dent in our wallets trying every product imaginable. To save you time and money (those Louboutins aren’t going to buy themselves, ladies), we’ve compiled a list of some of our faves. You’re welcome!

1. It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Plus Keratin: You need this. It keeps my hair so touchable and soft…when it should totally be fried with all of the stuff I do to it.

Undoes all the damage.

2. Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo: Expect more room on your social calendar, because this dry shampoo will have you ready for a night out on the town in MINUTES. (For $5.99! Yes, $5.99.)

Gets the “Bargain Buy” award.

3. L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray: Thanks to my BFF Laura, I’m now obsessed with this hairspray. This uber-popular spray, recently re-introduced in the USA, is a cult fave of celeb stylists. The best part? It “disappears at the stroke of a brush.”

Laura-tested, Jennifer-approved.

4. Keratase Nutritive Bain Satin Nutrition 2 Shampoo: Great product! This is one of the few that removes oil yet leaves my hair soft and manageable. Works best for me with shampooing every 2-3 days.

Spency but WORTH IT.

5. Biosilk Silk Drops: For the perfect smooth, shiny finish you’ve been looking for! Tip: use a dime size drop! Greasy locks are not cute…

Lurve.
