friday five | food diary.

J:

Mercy mercy mercy. Friday is finally HERE.

I’ve been sifting through recent iPhone photos and realized I’ve been hoarding #foodpics and resto recommendations. For shame. Let’s catch up, shall we?

The Silver Moon | Lake Oconee: L and I had a girls getaway at Lake Oconee a few weeks ago and shared the most delicious fresh shrimp. It was photo-worthy obviously.

*Note: You may have trouble finding this gem of a restaurant because their sign simply says “Bar and Grill” so keep an eye out.

JCT Kitchen & Bar | Atlanta: You probably saw this gorgeous sight on our instagram page, but I had to give more info because it was THAT good. Steak tartare with a side of fried corn on the cobb. {not pictured MOMO sauvignon blanc}

Joey D’s Oak Room | Atlanta: Keeping with the steak theme… Sometimes a great steak is exactly what you’re looking for. Look no further than Joey D’s Oak Room! Conveniently located across from Perimeter Mall with a bar you MUST see to believe.

Gino’s East Pizzeria | Chicago: After dining here on my last two trips to Chicago, I definitely need to share the best deep dish in town. Gino’s East is exactly what they say it is… legendary. Can’t make it to Chicago? Gino’s will ship a pie directly to your door. #dangerous

Smith & Wollensky | Chicago: Exactly what a crab cake should be… crab. To die for. And highly recommend dining al fresco.

our favorites: summer beauty essentials.

We’re headed to Atlanta market on Friday to buy for Fall/Winter 15 (be sure to follow us on Instagram @glitter_blog_xo for sneak peeks and behind the scenes pics!), and afterwards we’re headed to Lake Oconee for a quick weekend getaway. Here are the seven things we never leave home without this time of year.

Summer Beauty Essentials

1 // Pale blue is THE nail polish color for summer 15 (we know you know this). L scooped Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Blue Away ($2.97 WHAT) the other day, and this polish brand just might make us abandon Essie forever. It dries super-fast and has an extra-wide brush for even coverage (and also a dumb name, but we can forgive that). We also love the Double Duty Top Coat.

2 // We both have wavy hair, and we like to experiment with sea salt spray to up the texture factor.  We like this one by Josie Maran, but different hair types need different sea salt sprays. This handy article will guide you to the right one for your hair.

3 // A sweaty face is not cute. These blotting papers by Tarte get rave reviews.

4 // Our friend Christa  is something of a lipstick savant. Coral Crush by Maybelline is her pick for summer – in her words, it’s “not very bright but super pigmented.” View other great options here.

5 // This natural-looking self tanning spray by L’Oreal is a year-round beauty essential. It’s honestly pretty goof-proof – just be sure to prep your skin before you apply. We graduate from the “medium” shade to the “dark” shade in the summer.

6 // Our favorite volume-boosting dry shampoo. Because washing, drying and styling your hair in the summer heat is straight misery. L has been known to go for a WEEK between shampoos using this. Really.

7 // Fedora – Despite our best ninja moves with dry shampoo and sea salt spray, sometimes the only answer to summer hair is a fedora. Throw it on and don’t look back.

We’re in it to win it this week. There’s TONS to do before we head to Las Vegas on Monday for MAGIC, including a little renovation at Dish (using that Annie Sloan Chalk Paint), networking (over champs at Lure, naturally) with the fabulous Kelly of Austen Hill and finalizing our trend list for fall. Stay tuned for some great posts this week, including the summer version of our short-trip packing strategy and a play-by-play of J’s hair transformation.

friday five: weekend getaway.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

We’re heading to Lake Oconee this afternoon for a MUCH needed weekend together. Here’s what the next 48 hours look like for us.

1. Cocktail: No boring wine glasses for us this weekend! L is bringing mason jars and paper straws to hold our cocktails. Stay tuned to see if we use J’s sparklers.

2. Appetizer: As J was cruising pinterest looking for an app to make for us this weekend, she came across this alternative to a full caprese salad. Easy to transport and perfect for us to munch on while getting ready. We had to graduate from Goldfish some time.

The Glitter Life Caprese Salad
so easy, colorful and cute.

3. Pool Accessory: Everyone. Cross your fingers and toes that the rain holds out long enough to give us a pool day. We need it. And also this Sunnylife San Remo Beach Towel for lounging.

we heart the blanket accents.

4. Outfit: Lake Oconee is super laid-back, so we’re all about an easy wardrobe for the weekend. REALLY feeling this Embroidered Halter Dress from shopsocialdish.com.

The Glitter Life Dish Statesboro
this print/color combo is PERFECT for summer.

5. Something New: You don’t always have to dish out dollars to enjoy delicious wine. We’re trading our usual pinto grigio for Barefoot Refresh this weekend.

If there’s one thing you do this weekend, follow us on instagram. It will be worth it. We promise.

edamame guacamole.

We mentioned this fantastic recipe for edamame guacamole on our Friday Five last week, and after making it we thought it deserved its own post. This might just replace hummus as our favorite appetizer.

Edamame Guacamole adapted from Two Peas and Their Pod

What You Need:

  • 1 cup shelled edamame (thawed, if frozen)
  • 1 1/2 avocados, peeled and diced
  • 1/4 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • juice from 2 limes
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • sea salt
  • pita chips or other veggies

How You Do It:

  • In the bowl of a food processor, pulse the edamame, avocado, onion, garlic, lime juice and cilantro until smooth. You may need to add a little water, a tablespoon at a time, if your guacamole is too paste-y. I used frozen edamame, and there was enough water clinging to the soybeans that I didn’t need to add any more.
  • Scoop into a serving dish and season with sea salt.
  • Serve with pita chips (Stacy’s Naked Pita Chips are our fave) or other veggies.
Shelled Edamame
run water over your frozen edamame to thaw it.
Onion + Garlic + Avocadao
fresh ingredients = fresh appetizer.
Food Processor
it’s okay to leave a few chunks in your guac for texture.
Edamame Guacamole
seriously healthy. seriously delicious.

This was a hit at my house. Baby Joe loves avocados, and we had fun shopping for them, peeling them, tasting them (just to make sure!), etc. The original recipe called for seeded and chopped jalapeno; I forgot to scoop one at the store, and I didn’t miss the heat. You could certainly add some though, if you like your guacamole spicy.

What’s your favorite healthy appetizer? Share it with us on Twitter or Instagram @glitter_blog_xo!

PS – Check out our pics from the weekend…the weather was GORGEOUS in Georgia, and we enjoyed every minute of it.
