home decor

lately.

J: Hi. Busy life happening over here. We’ve missed you. Let’s catch up, shall we?

As you know, Jay and I are expecting a little boy in May and we are officially in FULL nursery planning/baby shopping mode. We will do a nursery reveal once we have the furniture installed, but here are a few items I’ve scooped so far:

Curtains: Had. To. Have. These. They’re pretty perfect for basically any room in your home.

Pottery Barn Pom Drapes

Accent Table: A table very similar to this was one of the first purchases I made for the nursery to go next to the glider. Super cute. Great price. Target wins AGAIN.

Target Table

Animal Heads: I obsessed over finding wall decor for the nursery that wasn’t cheesy. Really difficult task. BEHOLD the most precious white animal heads we came across at Z Gallerie and purchased on the spot.

And now for a few pregnancy must haves…

  1. My girlfriend, Annie turned me on to Mama Mio products and they are nothing short of amazing.
  2. This top. In every color. Perfect for the layering I’ve been doing in the chilly weather. Perfect fit. Super soft.
  3. Still sporting heels on the daily, but these slippers are sweet relief when I get home. And in gold. Naturally.

Promise we won’t stay gone long this time! We have Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine’s Day on the horizon after all!

we shop: draper james.

Y’all. Fellow Southerner and professional cutie Reese Witherspoon has joined the ranks of Gwyneth Paltrow and Blake Lively with the launch of Draper James, a lifestyle retail site with a healthy dose of editorial and a decidedly Southern perspective.

While not extensive, the offerings are reasonably priced, witty/pretty and stay true to Reese’s Southern roots. We can see ourselves wearing these clothes and using this stuff in our homes. Draper James is selling a lifestyle that’s more attainable than other celebrity-driven sites like Goop and Preserve. We shopped the site (hey, somebody’s gotta do it) and picked out our faves to share with you. Here’s what we loved best:

design project: bedding redo.

From L:

Maybe it’s spring fever, I don’t know…but I have been ITCHING to upgrade the bedding in my bedroom. It’s never been anything special – just a duvet cover from Target, TJ Maxx, etc that I switch out every few years. A few weeks ago, with the help of our friend Kristin at Alva + Austrie, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered real, grown-up pillows. I’m so happy with how it turned out – it’s an interesting mix of patterns (which I NEED/LOVE) in simple shapes and mostly primary, not-too-feminine colors (both of which are necessary to maintain my happy marriage).

WHAT I STARTED WITH:

I already had some basics I was happy with: a grey velvet headboard from Urban Outfitters that I bought when Joe and I got married (almost ten years ago!) and new, simple all-white bedding (duvet + matelasse coverlet).

an almost blank canvas.

WHAT WE ADDED:

{Euro Shams} in one of my favorite fabrics, Thibaut Tanzania. Buy them here.

The Glitter Life Bedroom
euro shams in a straightforward – but still fun – print.

{Standard Shams} featuring a simple, black border by Crane + Canopy. Buy them here. Fun fact: every package from this company ships with a lavender sachet enclosed! I spent an embarrasing amount of time inhaling the one that accompanied my shams. Another fun fact: a handwritten note from “Brittany” was enclosed as well – she hopes I love my shams! Crane + Canopy gets my vote for Mail Order Company Most Likely to Make Your Day.

The Glitter Life Bedroom
i only ordered one set of standard shams.

{Throw Pillows} I actually already had two throw pillows in this amazing palm print…they were living at Social. Every time I passed them in the store I thought about how much I wanted them in my house. So I moved them! Buy them here.

{Lumbar Pillow} in Brunschwig + Fils “Gillian’s Zebras.” I knew I wanted a whimsical print accent on the bed, and Kristin and I both fell in love with this one. Buy it here.

I’m not finished with the room (is any room ever finished?!), but at least now the bed makes me really happy. Have you upgraded any of your rooms this spring?

spring design trends.

Today we’re partnering with Zillow to bring you Spring Design Trends. Let’s face it. After this brutal winter, we’re longing for pastels and warmer weather. What better way to start than sprucing up your space!?

Pastel tones that were originally popular throughout 1950s decor are making a comeback in 2014. These unsaturated, lighter and sweeter versions of robust hues are perfect for adding personality and creating calming atmospheres in any room of the house.

The versatility of pastels is endless. With clever styling, they blend seamlessly into existing décor without completely redecorating. Spring is just around the corner, encouraging homeowners to get creative with trending pastels throughout their homes. Here are four tips to for incorporating lighter tones.

1. Kitchen

Pastel tones work harmoniously with kitchen fittings such as stone, wood and stainless steel. Pinks and blues add a delicate country feel while lemons and mint greens provide a refreshing glow. For kitchens with existing black or granite fittings, work in neutral pastel tones such as grey, beige and olive green for a modern look. Get creative with application; year-round pastels can be introduced within backsplashes, kitchen tiles, appliances, painted cupboards and cupboard linings, and seasonal pastels can been included in practical items such as stools, dinnerware and even bouquets.

2. Bedroom

Colors evoke different sentiments; lighter colors are often thought of as feminine while darker colors tend to feel more masculine. Because of these connotations, homeowners commonly steer clear of pastels in shared bedrooms. However the fusion of pastel tones and darker colors create a comfortable, gender-neutral space with depth and character. Investigate mixing pastels such as pale greys and blues with dark contrasts. Add them into the bedroom with furniture, bedding, painted accent walls and artwork. Tie the tones together with patterned rugs, throw pillows and light fixtures.

3. Bathroom

Pastels pop when teamed with the crisp white basins traditionally found in bath and powder rooms. Bathrooms with existing color schemes can be complemented by harmonious pastel accessories. Adding new towels, a shower curtain and countertop decorations such as candles and soap dispensers are easy ways to infuse pastels into the bathroom. For balance, choose similar pastel tones in block colors and prints. For a more permanent and modern look, update floors, backsplashes or bath walls with unique mosaic tile featuring pastels contrasted with bold colors.

4. Living Room

Adding pastels to the living room is easy; choose a color and add it to an accent wall or piece of furniture, such as an ottoman or couch. Complete the look by adding smaller accessory pieces like cushions, vases, artwork and light fixtures in similar hues. Pastels are versatile because they complement existing colors in a living room without needing primary spotlight. The key is to choose the pastel that is a less saturated hue than the current feature color in the room. For a fuchsia feature, opt for accessories in pastel pink and cream tones. For a warm and inviting living space, choose earthly pastels such as beige and latte tones. To create a livelier feel, select vivid pattern pastel fabrics and team with neon hues and metallic features.
