spring cleaning: makeup bag.

In the spirit of spring cleaning, and inspired by this on the Glitter Guide, I decided to clean out my makeup bag this week. Things needed tossing, replacing…and it was a good excuse to do a little shopping.

First, the bag: J gave me this Tory Burch makeup bag five years ago, and I’ve been faithful to it ever since. It’s the perfect size for me, and I love how it stands up on its own.

L's Makeup Bag
full disclosure: i don’t think this has ever been zipped.

I’m a creature of habit when it comes to makeup. I wear the exact same products every day – too many choices stress me out! While I do keep a little box in my vanity for “special occasion makeup” (stuff I wear every now and then, like bright lipstick), my makeup bag is reserved for my everyday routine. Here’s what’s inside:

this is what it takes to make me look presentable.
it takes all of this to make me look presentable.

Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation in Nude. This formula has SPF and offers a good amount of coverage. Liquid foundation has a shelf life of one year, so I’ll need to replace this soon, even though it’s only half gone. The price is nice, so it’s totally fine.

Gross, Disgusting Foundation Sponge. TOSS (and then REPLACE). I should know better. Makeup sponges should be replaced every month, and (ideally) should be washed every week.

Lancome Effacernes Waterproof Concealer. Er, I don’t even know how old this is. My mom gave it to me a year ago, so it’s definitely past its prime. But the consistency seems fine…do I have to toss it? According to this article, yes. Bummer.

I may replace it with this.

Laura Mercier Eye Shadow Primer in Linen. Same situation as the concealer – no clue how old it is.

That shade is kind of light for me, anyway. I may replace it with this:

Franche Pressed Powder in Douce. FINALLY! Something I can keep. Pressed powder will last two years (and loose powder will last three). I have a love/hate relationship with pressed powder, so I don’t use a ton. This should be good for another year. I heard a rumor that this line has been discontinued…and my suspicions were confirmed when I tried to find a link to this product. At least I have another year to go!

Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer Pencil in Noir. KEEP. Ironically, the product with the longest shelf life (three years) is the one I go through the quickest! I love love love this eyeline, and it’s good thing it’s cheap because I go through a pencil every six months or so. I keep one in my purse for touch-ups, too.

Diorshow Mascara in Black. KEEP, but not for long. Mascara only lasts three months, so I will have to replace this in a few weeks. My mom gave me this for Christmas (seriously, I wouldn’t have any makeup if it weren’t for her!), and I am in love. The brush is tiny, which took some getting used to…but now that I have the hang of it, my eyelashes seem to have doubled.

Rimmel Eyebrow Pencil in…brown? TOSS. This thing is so old that the words have rubbed off. I kinda think it may be the wrong color for me, anyway…but I do like the little brush on the cap. Handy!

Rimmel Eye Brow Pencil

Rimmel Natural Bronzer in Sun Dance. Can you tell I’m a big Rimmel fan? I like this color a lot, but I hate the cheap plastic top. I wish it was a compact! J recommends Hoola Bronzer by Benefit, so I’m going to try it (even though I could use the Rimmel bronzer for another year or so). REPLACE.

Rimmel GlamEyes Liquid Liner. Okay, this is one Rimmel product I don’t really love. The brush is kinda flimsy, so it’s hard to put on. I couldn’t find any guidelines about how long liquid liner goes, but I’m assuming it’s the same as mascara…so, TOSS. I don’t think I’ll replace though; I’m over the cat-eye thing. Are you?

Sephora Blinged Eyeshadow Palette. This is an indulgence. It takes up a lot of real estate in my bag, but it holds EIGHT shadows and had a huge mirror on the inside. Good news: Eye shadows last for three years, so I can keep it! Thanks, mom.

Dr. Lipp Lip Balm. Lip Balm lasts forever (or until the consistency changes), but this tube has been squeezed to within an inch of its life after only a few months. J and I both use this fantastic, thick balm. I’m going to buy multiple replacements. I also had Fresh Sugar lip balm hiding in my bag – I’m going to keep that somewhere else (my car?), so I don’t have multiple lip balms in my bag.

NYC Cityproof Gloss in Everlasting Blossom. I love this gloss so much that J gave me TWO tubes for Christmas this year. I must dispute NYC’s claim that this an “eight hour” gloss…but I love it anyway. I go through a tube every two months.

i buy this many at a time. {$3}

Various Makeup Brushes. KEEP, but it’s time to wash them. I use this Sephora spray wash – just mist and wipe! No water necessary.

february ’13 birchbox.

Happy Thursday, ladies!

Sorry for the delay in my Birchbox post. Our Vegas trip had me playing catch-up all week. Without further ado…

February Birchbox
the goods.

1. Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle. I love a leave-in treatment. With uber long hair like mine, it’s pretty much a requirement. This product really has its way with frizz. It’s back-ordered until March 2 for a reason…

Beauty Protector
a shield from heat and sun damage.

2. Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips. Yes, this was originally created for new mothers facing sore nipples from breastfeeding. BUT it has gained a rep with London makeup artists as the ultimate lip gloss. I have to agree! Put it on before bed and wake up with super smooth lips.

L and her mom are big fans, too.

3. Juicy Couture Couture La La. It’s no secret that L and I love the Juicy perfumes and Couture La La is no exception. This fruity/floral scent is really pretty and not too sweet or too girly. Hmmm, I think it’s time for new full-size bottle….

4. Dermablend™ Smooth Indulgence SPF 20 Concealer. I appreciate a concealer that doesn’t feel heavy or thick. Smooth Indulgence from Dermablend stays in place and gives plenty of coverage without weighing your face down. Highly recommend.

Dermablend Concealer
this provides a nice layering base.

5. Ghirardelli Milk & Caramel SQUARES. What a pleasant surprise! I love these little squares, but won’t ever buy them for myself. Hint, hint. -_-

6. Votivo Mini Candle. I’m pretty sensitive to strong scents, but Red Current by Votivo was quite pleasant!
