Friday Five

friday five.

It’s FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY, glitter girls!

We’ve had a very productive week here at the Glitter Life. We’ve been selected as contributors to Lucky Magazine’s online community, and we are SUPER excited to announce that we have been selected as a Birchbox affiliate (more details on that later)! After such a busy week, we’re definitely looking forward to the weekend. Here’s our to-do list!

1. Watch THE BIG GAME. This Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons take on the San Francisco 49ers at the Georgia Dome to see who will head to New Orleans to compete in the Super Bowl. Even if you’re not a big football fan, you have to admit it’s been fun to see the Falcons advance so far this year. Stay tuned to our Twitter feed (@glitter_blog_xo) on Sunday as J will be tweeting LIVE from the game.

2. Try a new recipe. Speaking of football, these hummus cups from Inspired Taste are the perfect thing to make if you’re watching the game at home (or someone else’s home – they travel well). It’s easier to say no to chili cheese dip if you have a healthy, delicious alternative!

easy, fresh and healthy.

3. Paint Our Nails (duh).  Since we’re Falcons fans–rise up!–we’re going to attempt this red and black manicure we found on Habisky Nails.

Red & Black Nails
we can do this!

If you’re not from Georgia, take a cue from our West Coast BFF Jennifer and go with this fun Essie shade, seen on our Emerald City post last week.

4. Play in our closets. Yall, the weather has been WEIRD here lately. It’s been in the seventies all week, but it’s supposed to be freezing again this weekend. Since we’re saving our clothing dollars for new spring styles, we’re going to play stylists in our closets and create some fun transitional outfits from pieces we already own.

Layered Looks

5. Catch a movie. The oscar noms were just announced, and we have to admit… only one us (J) has seen any of the Best Picture nominees. She *highly* recommends Django Unchained ,btw. L really wants to see Argo, and next on J’s list is Zero Dark Thirty. So make some popcorn and relax for a few hours before the work week begins again!

Don’t forget to check our Twitter on Sunday for J’s updates from the Georgia Dome! As always, tweet us your weekend pics @glitter_blog_xo.

friday five: new year's resolutions.

Happy Friday, glitter girls!

We’re focusing on New Year’s Resolutions for this week’s Friday Five. Behold, our top five resolutions for 2013.

1. Upgrade our desks. We’ve talked about work spaces before here and here, so you might think that our offices are already pretty fantastic. Not the case. There’s always room for improvement! We need creative yet functional spaces that allow for major multi-tasking.  Stephanie Todaro, contributor to the fabulous blog Design*Sponge, has three new desk set-ups to inspire your own office makeover.

Quirky Desk
we must, must must have that dachshund letter holder.  we must.

2. Take our manicures to the next level. Normally we just experiment with nail color…but this year we’re going to go beyond polish and try this chic glitter mani from the Glitter Guide (of course).

Glitter Mani
we can do this, we can do this…

3. Eat more vegetables. We’re actually pretty healthy eaters…but we could probably benefit from eating a few more veggies. Check out these amaze healthy fruit and vegetable recipes from Cooking Light.

Lentil-Barley Burgers

4. Train for a 5K. L, a sorta-kinda runner, was sidelined in 2012 by injury after injury. This year, it’s back to square one. We’re both going to run a 5k…at some point. Here’s our training plan.

L walked this 5K...but will run the next!

5. Learn to frost cupcakes.  It’s time to step up our baking game. We’ve put this off long enough. Valentine’s Day is coming up and WE NEED TO LEARN how to frost cupcakes.  Our Best Bites gives the BEST how-to.

friday five: nye essentials.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

This week’s Friday Five is dedicated to New Year’s Eve essentials. After all, it’s a big night and you need to look/feel amazing! Here we go…

1. Chain-strap bag. NYE is not the night to lug around your trusty tote. You need a small, clutch-sized bag with a chain, so you can sling it over your shoulder  when necessary. We both love our Tory Burch Reva clutches–J’s is gold, mine is black. Those exact styles aren’t available any more…so why don’t you go for this one?

Tory Burch Logo Clutch
keeps your hands free to hold a cocktail and noise-maker thingy.

2. Bling. We believe strongly in the power of bling. Whether you’re wearing jeans and a sweater, sleek black pants and a sparkly top, or a full-on cocktail dress, NYE is the night to bring out your biggest, brightest bling. We love these earrings from Social Statesboro.

call 912.681.7008 to order.
Blingy Earrings
both pairs are only $18! score.

3. Stay-put Lip Gloss. Your lip gloss will have to last through cocktails, dinner, more cocktails, champagne, and a smooch or two. Avon Perfect Wear Extracting Lip Gloss stays put for–wait for it–eight hours. Actually, according to Oprah’s testers, it lasted for for ELEVEN hours, with no reapplying. Either way, this will get you through the night.

Avon Extra-Lasting Lip Gloss
eat, drink and be merry. this gloss isn’t going anywhere.

4. Tights. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you have to wear ski pants. Keep warm and stay stylish with a pair of patterned tights. These will jazz up your LBD and–bonus–smooth you out.

Spanx Tights
pretty pattern + Spanx technology.

5. Wine Wipes. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again…wine wipes. These stain-erasing cloths are a must for your NYE bag. Say cheers to pearly whites!

Pearly Wipes
pearly wipes give us something to smile about.

friday five: gift wrap.

Hi hi hi, glitter girls!

Happy Friday! Our shopping is basically done (phew!). We’re tying up a few odds and ends this weekend, and then…THE WRAPPING BEGINS. We’ve gathered a few of our favorites wrapping ideas for today’s Friday Five.

1. For the ladies in your lives: We rarely have a white Christmas in Georgia. We’ll take pink instead!

Pink Christmas
use any combo of brown kraft paper and pink trimmings. how pretty is that gold feather?

2. For bottles of wine: Use this genius idea from Martha Stewart to wrap your bottles of vino. No wine bag required.

Martha Stewart Wine Wrap
just wrap the bottle in two layers of tissue, then use wrapping paper for the outer layer. tie a tag to the tissue ends on top!

3. For the eco-friendly giver (or receiver): Another idea from Martha. Layer vintage or re-purposed papers like wallpaper scraps, grocery bags or newsprint pages and use fabric scraps or ribbon remnants to make a unique bow.

Vintage Wrapping Paper
reuse and recycle: put those old grocery bags to good use.

4. For the men: Um, how cute is this idea from blogger Sweet Paul? Wrap gift boxes in an old plaid shirt (or just buy cheap plaid fabric) and use a glue gun to secure the folds. Don’t go crazy with the glue–it only has to hold for a few days! Finish with a bow tie.

Vintage Bow Tie Wrap
manly.

5. For children (or the young at heart): We love this idea for re-purposing holiday cards into monogram gift tags (save this year’s to use next year!). Stencil the child’s first initial on a holiday card, cut out, and hole-punch. Secure with ribbon.

Monogram Gift Tag
you could also use one color wrapping paper for each child or family member–they’ll have fun sorting out their gifts!

We also like this cute printable gift tag–have fun guessing the gift!

Printable Gift Tag
we hope our gifts are SPARKLY and PINK.

BONUS: Check out these wrapping tips from Better Homes and Gardens.

Wrapping gifts is one of our favorite holiday traditions. If we lived in the same city, we would totally grab a bottle of wine and wrapping supplies, turn on “Mariah Carey Christmas” on Pandora, and make a night of it.

Enjoy your last minute holiday preparations!

friday five: holiday survival strategies.

Happy Friday, glitter girls!

Eeeeek, only eleven days until Christmas! Holiday parties are in full swing (what to wear?! what to bring?!)) and shopping is at a fever pitch (what to buy?! how much to spend?!). Don’t stress. J and I are here to help. In keeping with our weekly tradition, we present today’s Friday Five: Top Five Holiday Survival Strategies.

1. Have a go-to appetizer. How often does it happen? You look at your calendar and realize you have yet another holiday party tonight…and you have to bring an appetizer. J and I have an arsenal of easy party recipes (duh, we get a LOT of invites), and this HONEYCRISP & GORGONZOLA CROSTINI from Channeling Contessa is one of our faves this time of year. Super easy, super pretty and sure to impress.

Honeycrisp Crostini
quick. fresh. easy.

2. Stock up on unique hostess gifts. Hostess gifts are a challenge. You want to show your appreciation for a gracious invite (your mother raised you right, after all), but you might not know your hostess that well. You may be tempted to go for something generic and inoffensive (another bottle of wine!), but don’t. Use this opportunity to give her something unique and creative, as well as thoughtful and useful. This list from Real Simple has twenty-two ideas for the hostess gifts. Our fave is this adorable sewing kit from anthropologie. You can order a bunch, or try your hand at making them in bulk. These would also be cute teacher gifts. Just grab and go! [[For the record, J and I would not sneeze at a bottle of wine, if we are your hostesses and that’s your thing.]]

Anthropologie Sewing Kit
this would be an easy DIY.

3. Make the most of your shopping dollars. We know, we know. Shop local. We really do try, but sometimes there’s just no reasonable alternative to online shopping. As long as you’re clicking away, you might as well earn skymiles to help with your holiday travels. Delta offers a certain amount of skymiles per dollars spent on TONS of websites. For example, J’s Christmas card order from minted.com earned her 3 miles for every dollar spent. Might not seem like much, but it adds up as you start checking things off of your list!

Skymiles Shopping
Watch the miles add up as you shop!

4. Detox on the go. Whether you’ve imbibed too many candy cane martinis, eaten too many slices of fruitcake, or dealt with a toxic relative, detoxing is critical during the holidays. This Tory Burch beverage container from the Neiman Marcus by Target collection is perfect for housing our Yogi Detox Tea.

it’s a little embarrassing how happy that logo makes us.

5. Amp up your everyday look. Holiday parties call for a little something extra in the makeup department. Swapping your neutral lipstick for something brighter will boost your confidence and make your teeth look whiter. You don’t have to redo your entire face before that party–just change your lipstick, throw your hair in a topknot and go. Now, where’s that mistletoe?

The holidays don’t have to be stressful. A little planning–stocking up on appetizer ingredients, buying hostess gifts in bulk beforehand–makes it easy to enjoy this time of year. How do you survive the holidays? Got any tips for us? Tweet us at @glitter_blog_xo.
