friday five: things to try.

Weekends are the perfect time to break out of your rut and try something new. Read on for our suggestions for a fabulous summer weekend, starting now!

1. Make a Golden Girl Cocktail. We love, love love trying new cocktails…especially when they’re easy to make. And ESPECIALLY when they’re named after one of the most fantastic sitcoms of all time. Click here for the recipe.

2. Have Dinner Somewhere New. J and Jay dined at at Atlanta hotspot The Optimist for the first time last week and absolutely loved it. Their menu changes daily, and if you’re lucky enough to dine there when bank scallops are an option,  DO IT. You’ll be glad you did.

3. Try a Waterfall Braid. We’ve been dying to try a waterfall braid, but um…it doesn’t look easy.

must…learn…how to do…

We’re going to attempt it though, using this helpful video tutorial from Hair and Makeup By Steph.

4. Bring on the Bling. We love the idea of a simple white dress paired with amazing statement earrings for the weekend. These Kate Spade beauties fit the bill.

5. Style Your Coffee Table. The weekend is the perfect time to tackle one area of your home and re-style it. If you’re like us, you’re more creative on the weekends, and you have time to run out and scoop some new accessories if you need them. Plus, tackling one area at a time keeps us from getting overwhelmed. So dust off your table and clear away the junk (and the remotes). Add some pretty books (check out Lauren Conrad’s list of favorite coffee table books here), a scented candle, and a few of your favorite random objects. We also love these inspiring links: the every girl, cupcakes and cashmere, and house beautiful. Re-styling this oft-neglected area can really change the feel of your home.

lime sorbet margaritas.

Our search for new summer cocktail recipes continues! J came across this fun and ridiculously easy recipe for Lime Sorbet Margaritas on Pinterest and tried it to over the weekend. Here’s how it went down.

The Glitter Life Margarita

Ingredients

  • 1 lime, cut into 8 wedges
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 pints lime sorbet
  • 1/2 cup tequila

Directions

  1. Rub the lime wedges around the rims of 8 stemmed glasses. Place the sugar on a small plate. Turn each glass upside down and dip the rims in the sugar to coat.
  2. Place 2 scoops of sorbet in each glass and pour 1 tablespoon of tequila over the top of each. Serve with a spoon. A cocktail you can eat with a spoon? That’s kind of our dream.

Want to see a quick vid of the process? Check out J’s Vine video!

friday five: beat the heat.

We love a three day weekend – the next Friday seems to roll around that much faster. It’s hot here in the South, and we’re headed for the pool tomorrow. Here, five of our favorite ways to cool off:

1. Watermelon Floats. These refreshing frozen-yogurt floats are a must have for your guests this weekend. Brighten up the glasses with fresh limes! We are making these. Period.

2. Tomato Zucchini Pasta Salad. This cold pasta salad is easy to prepare, absolutely delicious…and can sit safely in the sun for hours (it’s bound by a Sherry Shallot Vinaigrette, not mayo).

3.  Cucumber Lemonade Chiller. We ADORE rosemary in cocktails, so of course we fell hard for this adult lemonade. Make a pitcher and sip all day. Another summer cocktail option? Raspberry Beer Cocktails.

4. Refreshing Face Mask. When the heat gets to be too much, venture inside and whip up one of these masks using ingredients you probably already have on hand.

5. Refreshing Body Spray. Hop on over to Thank Your Body and learn how to make a refreshing body spray. Honestly, it sounds really easy.

friday five: derby edition.

There’s a lot to love about the Kentucky Derby, also known as the Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports: the traditions, the horses, the drama, the HATS. We felt strongly that this awesome event deserved its own Friday Five. Read on for our guide to everything Derby.

1. Cocktail. The Derby calls for a classic mint julep, the quintessential Southern cocktail. Learn how to make yours here. And go ahead and invest in some pretty julep cups. You can use them for flower arrangements, pencil cups – all kinds of things, really – later.

or put a twist on the traditional with these lavender mint juleps.

2. Appetizer. Ham biscuits are perfect Derby fare, and they’re totally doable – with flair! – on short notice. Buy frozen biscuits and a glazed ham from your favorite grocer; serve with homemade condiments like Blackberry Mustard and Lemon Herb Butter. Easy (and fancy!).

3. Outfit. This is a ladylike event, girls…no skinny jeans (gasp!), no slouchy tees. You need to bring it, even if you’re just watching the race at a friend’s house. Race day essentials include a bag big enough to hold your binoculars AND a pair of flats, pearls, and – duh – a huge hat. Still not sure? Check out Southern Living’s authoritative guide to Derby fashion here.

4. Speak the language. Click here for an informative guide to the new qualification system for the Derby and a list of the likeliest winners on Saturday.

5. Place your bets! Pick the horse with the most awesome name (we loved I’ll Have Another last year – this year we’re betting on Overanalyze) and make a little wager. Then sip on a mint julep and enjoy this American sporting tradition.

friday five: cinco edition.

We love a reason to celebrate, so we’re super excited that TWO fun things are going on this weekend: the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and Cinco de Mayo on Sunday. Read on for our tips for a fabulous, fun fiesta on Sunday…and stay tuned for our Friday Five: Derby Edition.

Cinco de Mayo

1. Party:  Cinco is on a Sunday, so keep it low key with a girl’s night at home. Courtney from Pizzazzerie put together LITERALLY the cutest fiesta we’ve ever seen. Loving the non-traditional colors!

2. Recipes: Courtney (love her) does it again with these four easy recipes your amigos are sure to enjoy this weekend. {Really obsessing over the prickly pear margarita…}

3. Outfit: Look. Just because it’s Cinco doesn’t mean you have to throw on a sombrero and call it a day. Get festive with these Mexican-inspired “Blanket” Mamie Ruth shorts from Dish.

4. Nails: Our FAVE West Coast reader, JFAV, has done it again with her holiday nails. Talk about ambitious– she brought the Mexican flag into play.

The Glitter Life CINCO Nails

5. 5K: Do the calorie math. Chances are you’ll consume a lot of beer and/or queso on Sunday. Boost your metabolism by running a 5K Saturday morning! Click here for a complete list of runs in Georgia this weekend. There are TONS to choose from.

azalea cocktail + weekend wrap-up.

Our friend Kate introduced us to this delicious cocktail during our weekend at the Masters golf tournament in Augusta. It’s a refreshing mix of gin and citrus, and the pretty pink color is about as girlie as you can get. Switch up your usual order with this spring concoction.

Azalea Cocktail served at the Augusta National Golf Course

What You Need:

  • 1 part lime or lemon juice
  • 1 part canned pineapple juice
  • 3 parts gin
  • Grenadine (enough to color the drink pink)

What You Do:

Mix in cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Garnish with lemon or lime wedges.

Azalea Cocktail
the awesome bar staff at locos grill & pub perfectly replicated the azalea cocktail during our Masters with the Moose party last night.

Try our other Masters-inspired recipes: Four Cheese Pimiento Cheese and Egg Salad Sandwiches.

Cell phones aren’t allowed on the course at the Augusta National, so our weekend pic selection is pitiful. We did capture a few moments, though.

We’ve got a great week of posts planned, including an awesome 30-minute meal, a recap of our buying trip in Atlanta, a sweet mother’s day gift DIY. Now, get back to work!
