Cocktails

homemade happy hour.

There are few things I enjoy more than hosting happy hour at my house. Whether it’s just for Joe and me, or a few girlfriends, or (in the case of last weekend) my sweet mama, I love making a few appetizers, setting out some cheese and pouring a glass of wine.

Homemade Happy Hour
heaven on a cutting board.

Today I’m sharing two of my favorite springtime appetizer recipes. Both are simple, seasonal and delish. {{If you’re not into cooking, scroll down to the bottom of this post to shop my cocktail hour essentials!}}

Asparagus with Curry Mayo
asparagus with curry mayo.

Asparagus with Curry Mayo

You’ll need:

  • 1 bunch asparagus
  • 1 cup light mayo
  • Yellow curry powder

Steam asparagus until al dente, three to four minutes). If you don’t have a steamer basket (I’ve misplaced mine, grrr), you can bring a shallow pan of water to a simmer, dump your asparagus in, and blanche for a few minutes. Don’t overdo it! When the asparagus turns bright green, use tongs to remove to a bowl filled with ice water. Chill.

Mix mayo with curry powder to taste. I typically use a full tablespoon, but you can add a little at a time until you achieve the desired taste. Once get you it right, sprinkle a little more over the top for color. Cover and chill for a few minutes. Serve with cooled asparagus.

Stuffed Cherry Tomatoes
stuffed cherry tomatoes.

Stuffed Cherry Tomatoes

You’ll need:

  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 4 oz bleu cheese
  • 4 oz cream cheese (reduced fat is fine, if you prefer that)
  • Fresh parlsey

Split cherry tomatoes in half and scoop out pulp. Turn over on a paper towel to drain. Mix bleu cheese with just enough cream cheese to bind. Spread cheese mixture inside tomato halves, mounding up on the top. Chop parsley with kitchen shears and sprinkle over the top.

Homemade Happy Hour
the happiest of hours.

Add at least one or two hunks of cheese (I love Manchengo), crisp veggie crudites, crackers and – of course – your favorite wine. Bonus points for pretty linen napkins, wine glasses and serving pieces. Shop all of my favorite happy hour essentials here. Cheers!

our pick: valentine’s cocktail.

Tomorrow’s the day! Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner for two at home, or inviting the girls over for Galentine’s cocktails, you should shelve your usual bottle of wine cocktail in favor of something special, like this Raspberry Rose by Kristin Alexander via Camille Styles.

what we’ve been wearing.

GOODNESS, you guys. I know I begin every post this way…but we have had a LOT going on. It’s hard for a girl to find the time to post! On top of our usual work and family commitments, Jennifer and I spent last weekend in Atlanta, buying fall inventory for Sole and Dish, taste-testing tacos and perfecting our frose recipe. Here’s a look at the styles and products we’ve been loving lately…

The Glitter Life Rainy Day Look
my go-to summer rainy day outfit

It feels like it has been raining for weeks, and there is no end in sight. Humid temperatures mean I’m pairing my trusty Hunter boots with my favorite Free People cut-offs and this $13 striped tank (which I also bought in solid white and olive because the fit is just so perfect).

The Glitter ife Tassel Earrings
so fun!

Looking to add a pop of color to your outfit? Jennifer’s SUGARFIX by BaubleBar beaded tassel earrings are only $12 and come in tons of colors.

The Glitter Life Cheetah Gladiators
my new favorite sandals

These gladiator sandals are one of my favorite finds this summer. They’re so comfy and the print is adorable. Plus they’re on sale right now for under $30!

The Glitter Life Jennifer Laura
reunited and on our way to dinner in the A

Last Friday, Jennifer and I celebrated National Rose Eve (that’s a thing, I promise) by going to Superica in some of our favorite items. No, we did not dress alike on purpose. Our tops are sold out, but you can still shop our denim and our totes. On Jennifer: Blank NYC white denim (these run small, so size up!) // Louis Vuitton tote. On me: Spanx black denim // Tory Burch tote.

The Glitter Life Rose Tote
carrying this cute tote everywhere this summer

Next morning we headed to AmericasMart to buy some fall pretties for my boutiques Sole and Dish. In honor of National Rose Day (I told you, it’s a real thing), I schlepped all my stuff in this Old Navy tote. Oh, and now it’s on sale for $8. You’ll spend more on your bottle of rose!

The Glitter Life Sleep Shorts
comfy and cozy in my home away from home

Great minds think alike…we both bought these fun sleep shorts and wore them Saturday night. UNPLANNED. I went preppy with pink with green leopards, and Jennifer stuck with her siganture palm print. Both prints are still available in all sizes.

The Glitter Life Business Casual
powering through the week in one of my favorite looks

I’ve been crazy busy playing catch-up, and I always seem to work better when I’m dressed for battle. This combo is my go-to: BCBGeneration blazer (also comes in white, paired with that Old Navy tank from up top, in white) // Blank NYC skinnies // suede heels (these are similar, and these are the dream version of mine). My clutch is sold out, but this BP one at Nordstrom is super similar, under $50 and ships free!

Follow along and share your outfits with us on Instagram @glitter_blog_xo. Happy hump day, everyone!

spring party prep.

Hello, spring! After two weeks of unseasonably freezing temps, it’s beginning to warm up again. The weather has us in the mood to entertain, so we’re sharing our spring party essentials today. Because who’s not in the mood to throw a little party at home?

sparkling glassware and blue and white plates

We like to serve wine in short old-fashioned glasses, like these and these. Colorful plates (mine are Blue Italian Spode Dinnerware) perfectly complement spring’s colorful blooms.

Antique table (similar here) paired with reproduction mid-century chairs

Ice down beer and wine in a blue and white planter. Mine is on loan (permanently? eek) from my mother-in-law, but this one is super similar.

colorful cocktail napkins // well-loved tray

Display glassware and cocktail napkins (these and these from H&M are adorable and stupid cheap) on a pewter tray. I received this one as a wedding gift almost twelve years ago – it’s still available on Wayfair! – and we also like this simple one. A reptile tray would add sophisticated texture to a lacquered table, and this cute little pineapple tray is perfect for a cheeseball and crackers.

I’ve been using a basic acrylic ice bucket forever. This one by Kate Spade would be a nice upgrade! I’d also love this gold corkscrew (Mother’s Day is coming up…right?).

these monogrammed drink stirrers by entertaining maven Emily McCarthy were a gift from Jennifer

baking brie. 🧀

Who says it has to be the holiday season to enjoy a little cranberry!? And there’s never a bad time for brie. We stumbled upon this delicious recipe during a routine check of one of our fave websites Apartment Therapy for reviews of the LexMod Ghost Chair. Enjoy!

Baked Brie with Cranberries
ooey, gooey cheese + tart cranberries = deliciousness.

Baked Brie with Cranberry Sauce

Serves 4 to 6 as an appetizer

What You Need:

  • 8-ounce round brie cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/3 cup cranberry sauce (try this Perfect Cranberry Sauce recipe or this more advanced Spiced Cranberry Sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup hazelnuts, unroasted and roughly chopped
  • Fresh rosemary, to garnish
  • Assorted crackers (we recommend Carr’s Water Crackers)

What You Do:

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F. Peel or slice off the top rind of the brie and scrape out a small amount of cheese to form a shallow hollow in the center. Place the cheese in a small baking dish like a pie pan. (If you plan on transferring the cheese to a serving dish after it’s baked, line the pie pan with a square of parchment paper.)
  • Mix the cranberry sauce, brown sugar, vanilla, zest, and nutmeg. Top the brie with this cranberry mixture and sprinkle the hazelnuts over it.
  • Bake for 8 to 12 minutes or until the fruit is bubbling and the cheese is gooey. This is a delicate process, and baking time can vary. The goal is to take the cheese out after it has softened, but just before it collapses into a heap.
  • If desired, lift the parchment paper and use a spatula to carefully slide the cheese onto a prettier serving dish. Garnish with a rosemary sprig and serve immediately with assorted crackers.

friday five: links we love.

Whew, we made it through another week! J’s been jetting around the South for work and L’s been getting used to having an infant in the house again…so we’re feeling especially grateful for the next 48-ish hours. Here’s hoping your weekend will be a mix of fancy cheese, champagne and DIY design!

1 // Modern cheese plate // Tailgating spreads don’t have to be fancy. Sometimes all you need is a little cheese and some cornichons. Cupcakes and cashmere shows us how to create a modern cheese plate here.

2 // Champagne // Apparently there are 22 reasons to have champagne on hand at your house. That’s 21 more than we needed.

3 // Sunburst Light Fixture // We’ve both been on renovation rampages at our houses. This (fairly) easy DIY sunburst light fixture from the girls at A Beautiful Mess just might fit into our weekend reno plans.

4 // Stylish Survival Guide // No, we’re not coming to you live from #NYFW (this year)…but this “How To Survive Fashion Month” article by Whitney Port does have real life application for us. And for anyone who happens to be traveling out of town for “work.”

5 // Perfect Sunday Afternoon Project // After a weekend of football (and possibly struggling to re-wire that Sunburst Light Fixture), indulge your creative side and re-style your coffee table. Use this handy tutorial from Domino as a guide. As if we needed another excuse to purchase pink peonies! Happy Friday, yall.

friday five: links to stuff we love.

You guys. Two big pieces of news. 1) J IS BACK. Stay tuned for posts on her amazing honeymoon. 2) We are ready for the WEEKEND. We know you’re shocked. Check out five things that are making us happy right now:

Friday Five Link Love
bikini + shades + cocktails + watermelon = our perfect weekend

1. L Space Print Wrap Top. L*Space makes the best bikinis; every year, one silhouette dominates Pinterest. Last year it was the Audrey fringe top; this year it’s the Chloe wrap top. We love how the wrap-style gives us maximum adjustability. Bonus: the print reverses to basic black.

2. TOMS Aviators. We are both devoted Ray-Ban wearers…but right now we’re really loving these Kilgore aviators at our favorite do-good company, Toms. For every pair sold, Toms will give a child the gift of sight. We’re offering a special discount on these just for you. Call Sole at 912-764-7463, mention “The Glitter Life” and get an extra 15% off a pair for yourself.

3. Cocktail Napkins. MUST HAVE. This adorable cocktail napkin (comes in a set of four) would look even better sitting underneath a Grapefruit Paloma.

4. Watermelon Salad. One of our favorite summertime recipes. So easy to throw together – all you need is watermelon, mint and feta.

5. How To: Host a Successful Sale on Instagram! If you need a little extra cash to support your bikini and sunglasses habit (ahem), check out these handy suggestions for throwing a killer closet sale on Instagram. Haul out your gently-used duds, snap some pics, and start making money. Then spend it on cute cocktail napkins.

PS – We’re excited to celebrate our wonderful mothers this weekend! Share your Mother’s Day pics with us on Instagram (@glitter_blog_xo).

review: beauty + essex brunch.

Today we’re flashing back to J’s bachelorette party in New York City to bring you a restaurant review. On the recommendation of our girls at BCBGeneration, we booked a Sunday brunch reservation at Beauty + Essex, a bi-level, chandelier-lit restaurant and bar on the Lower East Side.

The Glitter Life Beauty & Essex

B+E has a retro vibe and features a pawn shop entrance (cool but also a little confusing).

BE2
this is what happened when we told maggie and mary to “act natural.”

After cocktails at the bar, we moved into the main restaurant for brunch. The real scene at B+E is the champagne brunch upstairs (which was just getting cranked up by the time we left)…but we were in the mood for something more chill after our flights the day before. If you’re looking for great people watching, definitely request to go upstairs!

We enjoyed brunch at a large round table (great for conversation) under a pretty skylight.

What We Drank + Ate:

Plus mimosas, of course.

more brunch deliciousness. photo: you made me like you.

What We Loved:

Everything tasted seriously great, especially that biscuit. We also loved the quirky, speakeasy-ish atmosphere.

What Was Just Okay:

Our service was competent but not amazing.

Our Verdict:

Brunch was great, but if we ever have a chance to go back we’re going for dinner. We can’t stop thinking about the dinner menu – Lobster tacos, anyone?

What’s your favorite brunch spot?

friday five: link love.

Happy Friday! J’s honeymooning in Italy this week and next, so L is holding down the glitter fort.

Here’s what we’re feeling right now: a charming springtime salad, the cutest tote, a must-try cocktail, how to use your iPhone (really) and a quiz we dare you to take. Hope you love these links as much as we do!

The Glitter Life Friday Five
our weekend musts: two must-makes, two must-dos, and one must-have.

1. Salad Nicoise. We’re craving fresh flavor right now, and this gorg salad (half the joy is in the arranging) brought to you by A Beautiful Mess fits the bill perfectly.

2. Cutest Tote Ever. Yes. Just yes. We’re ordering this tote pronto.

3. Grapefruit PalomaWhat’s a Paloma, you ask? A delicious tequila-based cocktail with just the right amount of fizz. So refreshing. Just looking at this picture makes us wish it was happy hour.

4. 20 Cool iPhone Hacks. This article details 20 useful tricks to get the most out of your beloved iPhone. Some you’ll recognize, most you won’t. At least we didn’t! Upgrade to fancy quotation marks? Don’t mind if we DO.

5. Quiz. Flashback to our Seventeen magazine days – who doesn’t love a good quiz? Take the “How Design Savvy Are You?” quiz by Domaine and test whether you know your book-matched from your herringbone. Spoiler: L is a Design Master! But you probably knew that already. 😉

Hope you have a beautiful weekend!
