Behind the Scenes

what we’ve been wearing.

GOODNESS, you guys. I know I begin every post this way…but we have had a LOT going on. It’s hard for a girl to find the time to post! On top of our usual work and family commitments, Jennifer and I spent last weekend in Atlanta, buying fall inventory for Sole and Dish, taste-testing tacos and perfecting our frose recipe. Here’s a look at the styles and products we’ve been loving lately…

The Glitter Life Rainy Day Look
my go-to summer rainy day outfit

It feels like it has been raining for weeks, and there is no end in sight. Humid temperatures mean I’m pairing my trusty Hunter boots with my favorite Free People cut-offs and this $13 striped tank (which I also bought in solid white and olive because the fit is just so perfect).

The Glitter ife Tassel Earrings
so fun!

Looking to add a pop of color to your outfit? Jennifer’s SUGARFIX by BaubleBar beaded tassel earrings are only $12 and come in tons of colors.

The Glitter Life Cheetah Gladiators
my new favorite sandals

These gladiator sandals are one of my favorite finds this summer. They’re so comfy and the print is adorable. Plus they’re on sale right now for under $30!

The Glitter Life Jennifer Laura
reunited and on our way to dinner in the A

Last Friday, Jennifer and I celebrated National Rose Eve (that’s a thing, I promise) by going to Superica in some of our favorite items. No, we did not dress alike on purpose. Our tops are sold out, but you can still shop our denim and our totes. On Jennifer: Blank NYC white denim (these run small, so size up!) // Louis Vuitton tote. On me: Spanx black denim // Tory Burch tote.

The Glitter Life Rose Tote
carrying this cute tote everywhere this summer

Next morning we headed to AmericasMart to buy some fall pretties for my boutiques Sole and Dish. In honor of National Rose Day (I told you, it’s a real thing), I schlepped all my stuff in this Old Navy tote. Oh, and now it’s on sale for $8. You’ll spend more on your bottle of rose!

The Glitter Life Sleep Shorts
comfy and cozy in my home away from home

Great minds think alike…we both bought these fun sleep shorts and wore them Saturday night. UNPLANNED. I went preppy with pink with green leopards, and Jennifer stuck with her siganture palm print. Both prints are still available in all sizes.

The Glitter Life Business Casual
powering through the week in one of my favorite looks

I’ve been crazy busy playing catch-up, and I always seem to work better when I’m dressed for battle. This combo is my go-to: BCBGeneration blazer (also comes in white, paired with that Old Navy tank from up top, in white) // Blank NYC skinnies // suede heels (these are similar, and these are the dream version of mine). My clutch is sold out, but this BP one at Nordstrom is super similar, under $50 and ships free!

Follow along and share your outfits with us on Instagram @glitter_blog_xo. Happy hump day, everyone!

PS – If this crazy summer weather is wreaking havoc on your skin, you should try Jennifer’s favorite Kate Somerville products. Click thie photo to shop them all!

outfit roundup 6.5.17

Happy MONDAY – welcome to a five-day week. Yay? I’m teaching Vacation Bible School all this week, so you may not see me much…but Jennifer is ready with lots of cute Insta posts! In the meantime, here’s a look back at our week…

Family Swimsuit Look The Glitter Life
jennifer’s swim top + bottom + sunnies // james’ swim trunks + rash guard

Jennifer and Jay celebrated Baby James’ first birthday last weekend. Jennifer has promised to share party details soon, but in the meantime you can check out her swim look: one-shoulder top // bottom // sunnies // similar sunnies.

Comfy Shorts Look The Glitter Life
striped tee // pull-on shorts // vegan suede baseball hat

Tuesday and Wednesday were a bit of a struggle. Vacations are nice, but there’s so much to do when you return to the real world! Also, RAIN. My Wednesday look says it all: comfy basics (my fave striped tee and these cute pull-on Madewell shorts) + coffee + trusty ball cap. My hat is from Dish comes in tons of colors – this one from Kohl’s is similar.

Striped Maxi The Glitter Life
the cutest maxi

Target always has a great selection of summer maxis, and this year is no different. Our picks: this striped one and this floral one. Both are under $30!

Brunch Table Setting The Glitter Life
stemless champs flutes // water carafe // cake stand // serving bowl // placemat // gold flatware // 16-piece place setting

Brunch is the most important meal of the day, so when Jennifer’s al fresco Sunday brunch was rained out yesterday, she just moved it inside. Honestly, I would have eaten outside in the rain if it meant using this amazing table setting! Palm print and gold flatware and beaded plates, oh my.

Swimsuit Cover Look The Glitter Life
strapless swim top // swim bottom // tassel earrings // sunnies

So, something exciting happened last week – my boys and I were on the cover of Moments Magazine! We had a blast shooting the cover, even though it was a challenge to get both boys to look in the same direction at the same time – witness my death-grip on Ed. I was flattered to be featured, and Joe and I are grateful for the opportunity to share our family’s story. You can read the article via ISSU here.

Moments Cover The Glitter Life

I’m wearing my favorite bandeau swim top from Target (shop both pieces here), tassel earrings (see more of our fave tassel earrings here) and Toms Memphis sunglasses. The boys’ matching red Prodoh shorts are from local Statesboro store Bellies, Babies and Ballerinas.

Hope everyone has an amazing week – catch us on Insta! xo

how to: translating flowers into fashion.

insta-good
{notes from the presentation}

From L: Last week I had the fun opportunity to speak to a floral design class hosted by our sweet friends at Colonial House of Flowers (you’ve seen their work here, here and here – to say that we are obsessed with them is an understatement). I was super excited to be included, but…what to talk about? Because while I admire (and purchase!) their work on the reg, I’m a total dunce when it comes to floral design. I *do* know a little about creating outfits, however, and the more I thought about it the more I realized that arranging flowers in a beautiful way and creating an amazing outfit share the same principles.

I used this gorgeous front door featured on the Pottery Barn Blog and created by Lavin Label with the help of Kelli Boyd Photography, The Vine, Camp Makery and Colonial House as my inspiration to create a fall outfit.

Double Front Doors
{THIS DOOR}

After I finished drooling over these double doors, I got to work translating the floral design into a fall outfit (below). You can use floral design to inspire your fashion, too. Just follow these four principles…

Laura + Mannequin
{just a girl and her mannequin}. on mannequin: clothing + boots available at sole statesboro. on l: french connection sweater, spanx denim leggings, sole leopard heels (sold out).
  • First, build a basic structure or line using classic shapes. Monica of Lavin Label started with circular wreaths of classic greenery, which provide a great canvas for creativity. Of course, it helps that they’re hanging in front of gorgeous double doors! Similarly, I created the foundation of the outfit using three classic styles that work for a variety of ages and body types: a chambray button-down shirt, a corduroy A-line skirt and a cotton crewneck sweater.
  • Second, use rich, in-season neutrals. Fall provides the most amazing range of colors. Monica’s palette included navy, green, burgundy, gold, cream (floral examples include rose hips, amaranthus, bittersweet, olive branches and David Austin garden rose). I used the same palette for our outfit: the camel skirt references the matte gold stool, the cream scarf stands in for the cream roses. The olive anorak provides the “greenery,” and tan riding boots mimic the dark wooden doors and bronze lanterns. Originally I used a rich merlot HOBO clutch for the purple trailing flowers, but it sold at Sole right before the class, so I subbed in a ruby one. #improvise
  • Third, add texture. In both floral arranging and fashion, the more texture the better! Monica used natural branches and berries to create texture both on the wreaths and on the steps. I used skinny-waled corduroy, wool, and cotton cable-knit to create textural layers in our outfit. Cool-weather fabric offerings provide a wealth of texture – try tweed and cashmere, too.
  • Fourth, add points of focus. Light is essential in all design, whether home, floral or fashion. Monica added flameless candles in recycled glass lanterns, which plays off the subtle shine on the accent stool. The cream roses provide a point of light in the wreaths. We used a plaid scarf (any print creates interest) and added sparkly earrings to draw the eye upward. A note about sparkle: we absolutely believe in bright jewelry for day, no matter what the season…but it looks especially rich in the fall and winter when the rest of our palette gets darker. Other ways to add sparkle include a sequin top (ground it with a navy wool blazer or tweed jacket and jeans), a metallic leather clutch, and a pretty brooch pinned on a blanket scarf.

Key points to remember when creating your own masterpiece, whether floral or fashion:

  • Layer, layer layer textures and colors
  • Always include a point of focus or levity in your designs – Colonial House tucks tiny plastic animals into terrariums and other arrangements, and they make us so happy!
  • More is more this time of year – colors can be richer, go for more texture, add plenty of sparkle.

street style: best of nyfw.

It’s no secret that the style on the street during Fashion Month is just as interesting and as much of a trend forecaster as what actually comes down the runways. Here are our “best of” picks (pics?) for street style during New York Fashion Week. Of course, a lot of it was weird (*shakes head*)…but a lot of it was pretty great.

what we wore: wedding style.

YOU GUYS. It happened. J got married last weekend! Despite less-than-ideal weather, it was a beautiful, fun-filled weekend. We hope you shared in the journey via Instagram; if you didn’t, check out #JJB2015 for pics. We’ll be sharing some behind the scenes details with you soon! In the meantime…

Obviously THE DRESS is the biggest part of any bride’s wedding wardrobe style, but there are other opportunities to showcase your style during the wedding weekend. Because we kinda want to relive the last 72 hours, we thought we’d share our wedding style with you.

FRIDAY MORNING

{THE EVENT}: Lisa Baker and Sue Baker hosted a gorg champagne brunch on Friday morning at the Ritz Carlton Lodge for the bridal party. The vibe was casual and fun.

{THE BRIDE}: J chose a lace-back beauty from Urban Outfitters. So. Many. Compliments.

The Glitter Life What We Wore

{THE MATRON OF HONOR}: L chose a 3/4 sleeve print silk mini dress by Juicy Couture paired with “Tanya” high- heel sandals by Tory Burch. This dress has been sold out for a while (years, actually!), but you can view similar in-stock dresses here.

FRIDAY EVENING

{THE EVENT}: Following the wedding rehearsal, everyone gathered at the President’s House at the Ritz Carlton for a casual BBQ dinner hosted by the Baker family. A cocktail reception for out of town guests kicked off at 8pm.

{THE BRIDE}: J chose a sweet midi-length number with an open back. She looked absolutely beautiful…but we did have a few bra issues. Nothing that couldn’t be fixed by some bandaids, Fashion Tape and manicure scissors, though!

dress: lulus. find similar styles here.

{THE MATRON OF HONOR}: L chose this long-sleeve black BCBGeneration chiffon overlay dress, sans tights. It’s sold out on Shop Social Dish, but it’s in stock AND ON SALE here. This basic with-a-twist will become your go-to LBD – it works for all seasons!

weekend review: nyc.

We’ve been terrible about posting lately, but we’ve had a lot going on! To whit: we just returned from J’s whirlwind bachelorette weekend in the Big Apple. We’re hoping things will calm down soon – in the meantime, we wanted to share our pics (and some restaurant recs!) with you.

HOTEL:

Our homebase for the weekend was Hotel Hugo in SOHO. J’s friend Mary chose this place, and it was perfect for our group. We loved the decor (modern but warm) – we were immediately obsessed with the greenery wall behind the check-in desk. One drawback: the rooms are SMALL, so you have to leap around like a fairy to avoid cracking your shinbones on the bed platforms.

SATURDAY

After our group caught up over a quick lingerie shower for J, we headed to dinner at Revel in the Meatpacking District. The food was great (Annie ordered a pork chop that came on a lava rock – fancy!), but the place was so dark we couldn’t get any pics of it.

The Glitter Life Revel
revel: we sat just beyond the bar in the garden area.

After dinner, we walked down to Brass Monkey on the recommendation of the hostess at Revel. It was pretty chill when we got there but got a little more intense as the night wore on. We were forced to order a random apple pie dessert to hold our table (worth it – having a table was clutch), and it was NOT BAD.

maggie (fourth from left) did a great job harassing random bar patrons to take our group pics. job well done!

SUNDAY

In search of an early morning coffee / Breakfast at Tiffany’s moment, L explored a few blocks and stumbled on the new Hudson Square outpost of coffee roaster/bakery La Colombe. This place was calm and quiet…a nice change from the usual Starbucks.

No NYC weekend is complete without Sunday brunch. Our girls at BCBGeneration (New Yorkers through and through) recommended Beauty & Essex to us, and it didn’t disappoint. This place deserves its own post – so stay tuned for the details!

Mo, our group’s fearless navigator (she really is good at it) found a precious place for after-brunch cocktails. Hotel Chantelle is a Parisian-style cocktail lounge with $.92 mimosas (you heard us) and disco tunes. We sat in the bar (presumably the old hotel lobby). Our only complaint? Really intense heater action. We were sweating by the time we left. We didn’t make it up to the rooftop (place was PACKED)…but we will definitely try again next time we’re in NYC. This would be a great spot for brunch!

After wandering the streets of the LES and SOHO (no noteworthy purchases), we regrouped for a sweet treat at the famed tea salon Laduree. This place ALSO deserves its own post – coming soon!

We headed to celebrity favorite Catch for dinner Sunday night. The food was unreal; we’re going to be dreaming about the lobster rolls (J) and the tartare (L) for weeks. The service left a little to be desired, and we had a strange elevator experience on the way down, and we didn’t see any celebrities…but other than that, we loved. Stay tuned for details!

We ended our night at the The Standard Biergarten.

MONDAY

We grabbed a quick brunchy-breakfast at Jack’s Wife Freda before heading to the airport. The food at this Mediterrenean-style diner was amazing…but it was packed (hey, at least we knew it would be good!), and we were a little cramped. We both highly recommend the fresh-squeezed cantaloupe juice.
