vegas, baby.

How’s this for exciting?

Next week L and I are headed to Las Vegas for MAGIC, a giant apparel trade show. L has two cute boutiques in Statesboro, and we’re going to buy fall, holiday and pre-spring styles for her stores. We’ve been buying together for six years, but we’ve never been to MAGIC. We leave in T minus 7 days, 22 hours, 26 minutes {{not that we’re counting}}. Crown Room here we come.

Here’s the skinny on our trip:

1. Stay: Our base of operation for the week is the HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO. We love that it’s a little off The Strip. The decor is super cool, and the pool has its own reputation. Did I mention they offer Bikini Brunch on the weekends? Sold.

the trademark guitar juts out over the hotel.
scene of the crime: bikini brunch.
we’re hoping for an upgrade to this suite.

2. DO: MAGIC is a twice-yearly gathering of ten thousand of buyers and five thousand emerging-to-established designers. The typical sales volume per day is $200 million! The vendor displays are rumored to be insane–we plan to spend at least one day just wandering around before we start buying.

3. DINE: One of our *favorite* sushi restaurants, Nobu, is located right in our hotel. L and I have eaten at Nobu New York; we’re pretty sure we’ll feel right at home here.

double yum.

4. PLAY: We’re going to Vegas to work…but we definitely plan to experience the city during our week-long stay. Here’s what we’re thinking we’ll do in our downtime:

we’ll make a stop at the Chandelier Bar in the Cosmopolitan for sure.
maybe have a cold drink at minus 5.
why not swim with the sharks at the Golden Nugget?

We want your suggestions! Where should we wine/dine/play in Vegas?

friday five.

Happy Friday, Glitter Girls! Here’s what we’re loving for the weekend:

1. Make it a girl’s night. L was in town last night and we took full advantage of being in the same zip code. Sometimes you just need a little girl time, right? We know you’re busy, but call your BFF  this weekend and enjoy some time together.  Whether you do wine and cheese at home (like we did), or go someplace fancy (we did that, too)…it’s probably time to reconnect.

pretty, right?

2. Home Improvement. Is your bedroom boring? Accent pillows or a throw blanket can make a huge difference. Here are some rooms we love. I’m feeling bright whites and L is thinking COLOR COLOR COLOR.

3. Sock bun! Last week we challenged you to the fishtail braid (see our attempts below). This week… the sock bun! Watch this tutorial Wendy’s Lookbook. She’s super cute, y’all.

4. Outfit. The weather continues to be icky here in Georgia, so we’ve got to bring our own sunshine. We’re feeling these looks for the weekend. (Can you tell we’re obsessed with Atlantic-Pacific?)

5. Design Darling. We are in love with this super cute website! L and I are always looking for ways to spice up our offices (we spend the most time there, why not make it pretty?).  We’re working on a “dream desk” post–stay tuned for all our office faves.

Cheers to the weekend!

best bloody marys.

It’s no secret that I love, love love a Bloody Mary. My go-to recipe is super simple: Zing Zang mix, vodka, ice and lemon wedge.  {{Zing Zang mix manages to be totally perfect all by itself, no doctoring needed.}} But if I’m not making the Bloody Mary myself, I’m up for something different/complicated/special. I’ve tasted a LOT of Bloody Marys. Here are my top three recipes.

Masters’ Saturday Morning Bloody Bull

A little saltier and more substantial than your average Bloody.

Bloody Bull

  • 1 quart V8 juice
  • 1 10 1/2 ounce can beef bullion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 Tabasco sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • dash MSG (optional)
  • dash celery seed (not optional)

Combine all ingredients and chill.  Pour large shot of vodka over ice in tall glass and add above mixture.  Yields enough mix for 8 to 10 drinks.

**Adapted from Tea Time at the Masters. If you don’t already own this cookbook, you should.**

Barbecue Bloody Mary

Depending on the barbecue sauce you use, this can skew sweet spicy or spicy-spicy.

  • 6 ounces vodka
  • 12 ounces vegetable or tomato juice (recommended: V8)
  • 3 tablespoons barbecue sauce
  • 3 teaspoons prepared horseradish
  • Dash Worcestershire sauce
  • Dash hot sauce
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • Lemon wedges, for garnish
  • Neelys Dry Rub, for garnish, recipe follows
  • Jalapeno, for garnish

Mix all the ingredients except for the lemon and garnishes into a cocktail shaker with ice. Combine well.  Rim the edge of the glasses with a lemon. Dip into dry rub. {{Actually, you should do this no matter what recipe you use!}} Pour the Bloody Mary into the glasses filled with ice. Garnish each with a jalapeno.

Neelys BBQ Seasoning

  • 1 1/2 cups paprika
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 3/4 tablespoons onion powder

Add all ingredients to a bowl and stir until combined. Keep in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

*Recipe courtesy of Patrick and Gena Neely, stars of Down Home with the Neelys on Food Network.**

Sriracha Bloody Mary Recipe

This Bloody’s Asian twist comes from sriracha sauce, the new Tabasco.

Sriracha Bloody Mary

  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish
  • 3 cups V8 Juice
  • 1 teaspoon Sriracha Sauce (available at most grocery stores)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 3/4 cups vodka

Combine all ingredients and mix. Recipe makes about 4 servings. I recommend you keep the above mix in a pitcher and pour single servings of it in to a cocktail shaker, adding ice and shaking to chill each serving.

Garnish with the vegetables of your choice. I’m not a big celery person, so I like to get creative. Try pickled okra, asparagus, garlic-stuffed olives, green beans or baby carrots.

**Recipe adapted from The Tasteful Life.**

Cheers, Glitter Girls!

PS – If you’re ever in Statesboro on a Saturday or Sunday, drop by the Make Your Own Bloody Mary bar at my family’s restaurant, Locos Grill & Pub. Buy your vodka shot and experiment to your heart’s content with mixers and garnishes. You’ll probably see me there.

in my bag part 2.

Alright, ladies… Now that you’ve seen what’s in Laura’s bag, here’s a peek into mine:

just a few things…

1. Tory Burch Robinson Satchel: I absolutely adore this bag. The color is perfect. The size is perfect. No complaints. I’ve had her for almost and year and you can barely tell! I’m hard on my bags, y’all…

2. Kate Spade Lacey Wallet: This actually sat in my closet for a while until I purchased the Robinson Satchel. The gold compliments the cognac color perfectly!

3. Missoni for Target notepad: I’m sure most of you are familiar with the craze that was Missoni for Target. I was lucky to scoop these super cute notepads and a few other things! Let’s face it, I always have something to jot down.

4. Narciso Rodriguez for her eau de toilette: I’m pretty picky when it comes to perfume! Narciso Rodriguez has been a staple in my bag for a while. I love that it’s perfect for day or night and lasts most of the day!

5. Buxom Lip Polish: The color (Sandy) is perfect and it gives a nice plumping effect! It lasts a while which is also a plus…

6. Other random products: Colgate Pro Clinical: I HAVE to brush my teeth throughout the day. A little obsessive about it. Hand Sanitizer: A little obsessive about this too… Hair ties: So much cuter than your run-of-the-mill elastics! Ray-Ban Aviators: As L said, you just CAN’T beat this classic style! Very Top Gun. RIP Tom-Kat. Earbuds for the gym, business cards, mints…

the real deal.

SO, we must know… What’s in YOUR bag?

sun tan city.

Here at TGL, Laura and I are *huge* believers in sunless tanning. Sun spots and wrinkles are not cute, girls. Here are some of the products we use to achieve a flawless tan:

1. Bliss Soap n Scrub: It’s super important to exfoliate before using any form of sunless tanner. Bliss Super Minty Soap and Scrub is my go-to exfoliator. On top of sloughing off dead skin before my spray tans, it smells and feels amazing.

minty fresh.

2. VersaSpa: With VersaSpa you can choose a light, medium or dark shade with a clear or bronze finish. I highly recommend the clear unless you want to see results right away. The scent is minimal. There’s also a moisturizing option they call “prep” that is sprayed on in the booth like the tanning mist.  The entire process takes about 2 minutes, including a blow dry function that dries you off. Watch instructional video below before you go to avoid confusion while in the booth!

3. L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Mist: L and I swear by this ultra-fine mist! It’s perfect for touch-ups in between spray tans (our hands and faces fade QUICK, y’all…). No need to rub in and it dries super-fast. Spray it on, wait an hour…and POOF you have a smooth, streak-free tan. Great, right?

4. Hoola Bronzer by Benefit: I’ve tried plenty of bronzers, but this one is my favorite. It’s completely matte with no sparkle which is nice! It gives a very natural finish, and I can get the sun-kissed skin I love without having to fry my face.

how cute!?

What sunless products do you swear by?

Happy Friday, Glitter Girls! Here is what L and I are up to this weekend:

1. NAILS: Essie – Mint Candy Apple: It’s one of Essie’s best-sellers and for good reason! We’ve been known to paint our nails at the bar with this shade.

i added glitter. naturally.

2. SHOP: Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: You have three days left to stock up on fall must-haves before the prices go up on August 6 in-store and online. Frye boots on sale, y’all… Here are our favorites:

yes please.
must. have.
elbow patches!

3. RAIN: Since the weather in GA is looking less than ideal this weekend, we will be sporting our Hunter Rain Boots instead of our bikinis. *sigh*

cute, right?

4. HAIR: We have been *obsessing* over the fishtail braid for quite some time. This weekend’s nasty weather makes it the perfect opportunity to tackle the challenge. I will report back with pics of my braid. See our girl, Lauren Conrad, give a tutorial below:

5. DRINK: As the Olympics continue through the weekend… we will be celebrating with festive bubbly! USA! USA! USA!

What are you up to this weekend!?

in my bag.

Is it just me, or is the In The Bag feature the best thing in Marie Claire magazine? I’m always fascinated by the random stuff celebs have in their bags (rabbit’s feet, lottery tickets, etc). Jennifer and I decided to do our own version. Here’s what’s in mine…Jenny will post hers next week.

Laura's Tory Burch Amanda Hobo
a bag full of my favorite stuff.

First, the bag. My Tory Burch “Amanda” Hobo is the perfect size–not too big, not too small. Don’t  hate – she was a birthday gift from my mom. Now, for what’s inside…

i made this collage with ribbet!

1. Orange Hobo International Wallet. We sell a TON of these at Social, and for good reason. The Lauren holds an insane amount of stuff, and it totally works as a clutch, too.

2. Eucerin Original Healing Cream

3. Nail polish, of course. I’m currently wearing Sally Hansen Lacey Lilac (I want a job naming nail polish shades). Jennifer and I both love Essie’s Good To Go topcoat.

4. Pink Sharpie Ultra Fine Point permanent marker and 5. Kate Spade planner – This is the seventh year I have used one of these to organize my life. Some people can use Google calendar or their phone or whatever to keep everything straight.  Not me.  I am a paper person.

Kate Spade Planner
love love love the pretty illustrations

6. Bobby pins – I’ve got bangs issues! Mine are plain (blah)…I like these better.

7. NYC City Proof Gloss – I have neither the patience nor the budget for expensive makeup.  If I can’t buy it at WalMart, it’s probably not going to happen. {{There is no Sephora in Statesboro, in case you didn’t know.}} I’m a big fan of NYC–super cheap stuff that really works.

NYC City Proof Lip Gloss in Everlasting Blossom
seriously, this is how many tubes i buy at a time.

8. Ray Ban Aviators – The only sunglasses I will ever wear.

Plus other stuff like a mini-version of this toothpaste, Benefit Dandelion blush, (another gift from mom–anything nice I have is a gift from her),  my little boy’s silver rattle (for sentimental reasons–he’s definitely past the rattle stage now), headphones for the gym, and a corkscrew. Kidding. No, I’m not.

What’s in your bag?

XO, Laura

the well-dressed gym rat.

All Glitter Girls know it’s important to stay in shape. It’s bikini season… and flab peeking out from your l*space fringe bikini is not cute.

I recently became a member of Life Time Fitness here in Atlanta, and I must say it’s the best decision I’ve made in a while. It feels so good to burn off stress (and calories!) after a long day at work.

The facility is beautiful, the equipment is top notch (I can charge my iPhone while I’m on the elliptical? Sign me up!). An on-site cafe and spa are just bonuses.

cabbage fries.

Craving something salty and crunchy? You gotta make these right now. Cabbage fries are super healthy, super tasty, super easy…the perfect Sunday night snack.

Cabbage Fries
recipe adapted from Hazelnut, a cute foodie blog.
check it out!

Cabbage Fries

  • 1 head cabbage
  • olive oil
  • coarse sea salt
  • paprika
  • chili powder

Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage.  Slice  cabbage into wedges. It’s okay if the wedges come apart a little. Toss wedges with olive oil, sea salt (not too much), paprika and chili powder.  Transfer coated wedges to cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil. Roast at 425 degrees for 40-50 minutes (you want a little char on the leaves!). Serve with spicy ketchup.

Spicy Ketchup

  • ketchup
  • sriracha sauce (the Asian version of Tabasco–you can buy it at any grocery store.  even if you live in Statesboro, Georgia.)

Mix ketchup with sriracha sauce to taste.  Go slowly–the stuff is HOT.

I continue to be obsessed with sriracha sauce. Mixed with  ketchup, it makes a tasty-spicy accompaniment to cabbage fries. Or real fries, whatever.

Hope everyone had a great weekend! What’s your favorite healthy snack?
