Is it just me, or is the In The Bag feature the best thing in Marie Claire magazine? I’m always fascinated by the random stuff celebs have in their bags (rabbit’s feet, lottery tickets, etc). Jennifer and I decided to do our own version. Here’s what’s in mine…Jenny will post hers next week.

First, the bag. My Tory Burch “Amanda” Hobo is the perfect size–not too big, not too small. Don’t  hate – she was a birthday gift from my mom. Now, for what’s inside…

1. Orange Hobo International Wallet. We sell a TON of these at Social, and for good reason. The Lauren holds an insane amount of stuff, and it totally works as a clutch, too.

2. Eucerin Original Healing Cream

3. Nail polish, of course. I’m currently wearing Sally Hansen Lacey Lilac (I want a job naming nail polish shades). Jennifer and I both love Essie’s Good To Go topcoat.

4. Pink Sharpie Ultra Fine Point permanent marker and 5. Kate Spade planner – This is the seventh year I have used one of these to organize my life. Some people can use Google calendar or their phone or whatever to keep everything straight.  Not me.  I am a paper person.

6. Bobby pins – I’ve got bangs issues! Mine are plain (blah)…I like these better.

7. NYC City Proof Gloss – I have neither the patience nor the budget for expensive makeup.  If I can’t buy it at WalMart, it’s probably not going to happen. {{There is no Sephora in Statesboro, in case you didn’t know.}} I’m a big fan of NYC–super cheap stuff that really works.

8. Ray Ban Aviators – The only sunglasses I will ever wear.

Plus other stuff like a mini-version of this toothpaste, Benefit Dandelion blush, (another gift from mom–anything nice I have is a gift from her),  my little boy’s silver rattle (for sentimental reasons–he’s definitely past the rattle stage now), headphones for the gym, and a corkscrew. Kidding. No, I’m not.

the well-dressed gym rat.

All Glitter Girls know it’s important to stay in shape. It’s bikini season… and flab peeking out from your l*space fringe bikini is not cute.

I recently became a member of Life Time Fitness here in Atlanta, and I must say it’s the best decision I’ve made in a while. It feels so good to burn off stress (and calories!) after a long day at work.

The facility is beautiful, the equipment is top notch (I can charge my iPhone while I’m on the elliptical? Sign me up!). An on-site cafe and spa are just bonuses.

cabbage fries.

Craving something salty and crunchy? You gotta make these right now. Cabbage fries are super healthy, super tasty, super easy…the perfect Sunday night snack.

Cabbage Fries

Ingredients

  • 1 head cabbage
  • olive oil
  • coarse sea salt
  • paprika
  • chili powder

Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage.  Slice  cabbage into wedges. It’s okay if the wedges come apart a little. Toss wedges with olive oil, sea salt (not too much), paprika and chili powder.  Transfer coated wedges to cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil. Roast at 425 degrees for 40-50 minutes (you want a little char on the leaves!). Serve with spicy ketchup.

  • ketchup
  • sriracha sauce (the Asian version of Tabasco–you can buy it at any grocery store.  even if you live in Statesboro, Georgia.)

Mix ketchup with sriracha sauce to taste.  Go slowly–the stuff is HOT.

I continue to be obsessed with sriracha sauce. Mixed with  ketchup, it makes a tasty-spicy accompaniment to cabbage fries. Or real fries, whatever.

hair's the scoop.

We are no stranger to hair products here at The Glitter Life. Laura and I have put a *serious* dent in our wallets trying every product imaginable. To save you time and money (those Louboutins aren’t going to buy themselves, ladies), we’ve compiled a list of some of our faves. You’re welcome!

1. It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Plus Keratin: You need this. It keeps my hair so touchable and soft…when it should totally be fried with all of the stuff I do to it.

Undoes all the damage.

2. Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo: Expect more room on your social calendar, because this dry shampoo will have you ready for a night out on the town in MINUTES. (For $5.99! Yes, $5.99.)

Gets the “Bargain Buy” award.

3. L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray: Thanks to my BFF Laura, I’m now obsessed with this hairspray. This uber-popular spray, recently re-introduced in the USA, is a cult fave of celeb stylists. The best part? It “disappears at the stroke of a brush.”

4. Keratase Nutritive Bain Satin Nutrition 2 Shampoo: Great product! This is one of the few that removes oil yet leaves my hair soft and manageable. Works best for me with shampooing every 2-3 days.

5. Biosilk Silk Drops: For the perfect smooth, shiny finish you’ve been looking for! Tip: use a dime size drop! Greasy locks are not cute…

pimiento cheese.

In my fantasy life, I host fabulous dinner parties. In my real life, entertaining friends usually means wine and appetizers.

Big, fancy meals have their place, but few things are easier and more conducive to great conversation than a casual cocktail party.

This fantastic four-cheese pimiento cheese totally fits the bill: it’s easy–as long as you don’t mind dealing with a food processor, it’s make-ahead (more time for hair and makeup), and it takes a traditional, much-loved simple food and elevates it to foodie status.

I made this for my girls’ beach weekend, and everyone agreed it was delish!  Use it to make mini-sandwiches or as a spread with crackers and apples.

Pimiento Cheese Ingredients

Four Cheese Pimiento Cheese

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups (12 ounces) shredded white Cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 4 ounces crumbled bleu cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1 (4-ounce) jar sliced pimientos
  • 1 cup light mayonnaise (Hellman’s is the BEST, yall)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until not-quite-smooth.  Cover and chill for an hour or so.  Spread on party-size rye or country white bread, or spoon into a bowl and serve with crackers and sliced apples.

Tip: Resist the temptation to buy pre-shredded cheese. That stuff is coated with a weird substance that prevents it from sticking together in the package…which means your pimiento cheese spread won’t bind. Buy blocks of real cheese and use an old-school cheese grater.  COMPANY IS COMING, after all.

nail tips.

Here at TGL, Laura and I are *obsessed* with painting our nails. No color or design is off limits. With that said, I bring you neon tips with the help of reinforcers. (yep, those crazy white circles you used in high-school to keep your paper from falling out of your binder) Check it:

Step 1: SCOOP THE GOODS

I purchased these polish/reinforcers at my local CVS/Ulta. Feel free to switch up the colors! I think fushia with silver glitter tips will be my next move. Me? Glitter? Surprise Surprise.

Step 2: TIPS

Okay SO I figured this out the hard way… You need to start by painting your tips on fresh clean nails! The reinforcers were so sticky they even pulled up dry polish. Not cute…

Step 3: FILL IN

I found that taking the brush in horizontal strokes rather than vertical helped a lot! Either way, practice is going to be key. I’ll be honest, I re-did mine 3 times before I got them halfway decent. Perfectionist tendencies…

raspberry beer cocktails.

Happy Friday, Glitter Girls!

We love these refreshing raspberry beer cocktails, adapted from Southern Living and introduced to me by my friend Rebecca.  They’re perfect for your backyard barbecue or beach weekend. Why don’t you make a pitcher this afternoon?

How pretty are these?

Ingredients:

3/4 c fresh or frozen raspberries
3 1/2 (12 oz) bottles beer, chilled (you can use whatever kind–we used Bud Light on our beach weekend)
1 (12oz) container frozen raspberry lemonade concentrate, thawed
1/2 cup vodka
Garnish; lemon and lime slices

Method:

1. Stir together first 4 ingredients. Serve over ice. Garnish, if desired. Um, how easy was that?

Tip: To make ahead (and you know we like to do this), stir together lemonade concentrate and vodka in a large container. Chill up to 3 days. Stir in raspberries and beer just before serving. Garnish, if desired (we desire).

yum. no-bake energy bites.

I don’t like baking but I *do* like energy…so I have sort of flipped out for these no-bake energy bites, adapted from the super-cute blog Gimme Some Oven. One of my Social girls brought some to work the other day, and I have been obsessed ever since. These are ridiculously easy and super healthy, too.

No-Bake Energy Bites Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dry oatmeal
  • 2/3 cup toasted coconut flakes
  • 1 cup almond butter (or peanut butter)
  • 1/2 cup ground flaxseed (or wheat germ)
  • 1/2 cup dried fruit, like Craisins or dried apricots (or chocolate chips. i know you were thinking it!)
  • 1/3 cup honey (honey isn’t my fave– i use a little less than 1/3 cup)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Method:
Stir all ingredients together in a medium bowl until thoroughly mixed. Let chill in the refrigerator for half an hour. Once chilled, roll into balls of whatever size you would like (yes, these sort of look like meatballs). Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 1 week. Makes about 20-25 1″ balls.

Toasting Coconut:
Spread the coconut on a baking sheet and bake for 18 – 20 minutes at 300 degrees, until it’s a nice nutty brown. Coconut burns easily, so maybe start at 15 minutes and go from there. Tip: Keep your un-toasted flakes in the freezer in a ziploc bag.  They will last FOREVER.
