salted chocolate chip cookies.

I’ve been on a quest for the perfect salty-sweet cookie/brownie/dessert recipe for a while now. I’ve tried several, only to be disappointed with the results. {{Surely the recipes–not my lack of baking skills–are to blame.}}

I tried this one yesterday, and I have to say…it’s pretty perfect.

Salted Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar (the original recipe called for dark brown–I used light brown because that’s what I had on hand)
  • 2 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (the original recipe called for two teaspoons…but I ran out)
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoons sea salt, plus more for sprinkling on top of each cookie dough ball
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (the original recipe called for 2 1/4 cups…but it seemed silly to me to buy another bag of chips just for that extra 1/4 cup. If you like a TON of chocolate chips in your cookies, go for it…but I didn’t miss the extra chips.)

Method:

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or using a hand mixer, like I did), cream the butter and sugars together on medium-high speed until light and fluffy (about two minutes in a stand mixer, three with a hand mixer). Reduce the speed to medium-low and add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each egg is added. Add the vanilla. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda and sea salt. Mix in the chocolate chips using a wooden spoon.

Now, THIS IS KEY. Cover and chill the dough overnight. Chilling cookie dough (this and any other recipe) prevents the cookies from spreading when they bake. You should also put the cookie dough back in the fridge while each batch of cookies bakes, otherwise your first batch of cookies will be perfectly round while the later batches are a big spreading mess.

Heat your oven to 350 degrees. Lightly coat a cookie sheet with cooking or baking spray. Using a cookie scoop or melon baller, scoop out small balls of cookie dough and place about two inches apart on the cookie sheet. Sprinkle a few flakes (or do a few grinds) of sea salt on each dough ball. Bake for 15 minutes, until the edges of the cookies are brown. Remove to wax paper to cool and repeat with remaining {{chilled}} dough.

Voila! You now have the perfect salty-sweet dessert for your next party. Or your next Sunday afternoon cookie binge (NOT ME).

friday five: vegas edition

Happy Friday!

Since we still have Sin City fresh in our hearts and minds, we’re dedicating this week’s Friday Five to the one and only Las Vegas. We know you’re dying to see what we did when we weren’t tearing up MAGIC. Here are our top five Vegas dos.

1. Hard Rock Hotel and Casino: To say that L and I are amateur gamblers is an understatement…but we actually had good luck here! We learned how to play craps with some very friendly folks and drank free wine. Can’t beat that.

#highrollers

2. Pink Taco Happy Hour: After a long day at the pool, we decided happy hour was in order. We were pleasantly surprised to find Pink Taco (located right in our hotel) had a $5 happy hour menu! Margaritas, wine, shrimp cocktail, quesadilla…all $5. Too bad we didn’t stumble upon that earlier into our trip.

Pink Taco Menu + Drinks
scary menu, good drinks.

3. The Cosmopolitan: Chandelier Bar : Y’all. This is one of the most beautiful spaces we have ever seen. You literally sit INSIDE the chandelier to enjoy your cocktails. Check it:

4. Style Limousine Service – L and I are business-class travelers…on coach budgets. So imagine our delight when my boyfriend, Jay, arranged for us to ride to and from the airport in a private limo. So one-percent! We highly recommend our friends at Style Limousine Service. Not only did the driver pick us up from the airport at the UNGODLY hour of 630am…but he cheerfully obliged when we begged politely asked him to stop for bagels at Panera. Um, and we really like the name.

Style Limo
vegas here we come!

5. Nails – We can’t have a Friday Five without nails! We searched high and low for the perfect Vegas-y, glitter-y shade…and of course we didn’t find it until after we got back from our trip. Whatever, we’re going to rock it this weekend and reminisce about our great time.

24K Gold Nail Polish

Have you been to Vegas? What are your top five dos?

YAY for the weekend!

august birchbox.

We’re baaaack! Vegas was amazing y’all. As we get our pics together to share with you this week, check out what was in my August Birchbox:

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Birchbox, here’s the low down: it is a monthly (or yearly) beauty subscription service that sends 4-5 deluxe samples based on your profile right to your door for only $10 a month (or $110 a year, you get one month free!). Click here to sign-up! We highly recommend…

And now for the goods…

it came in this super cute beauty school packaging!
the goods. (sans razor)
in lionfish! a pretty brown/bronze.

1. stila smudge stick waterproof eyeliner: I love this liner! Just enough smudge and the tip is the right size for finer lines. It stays on too! The color is easily adjusted for a light or heavier look.

juicy’s bottles are always GORG.

2. juicy couture viva la juicy la fleur: Between L and I, we have purchased every Juicy perfume ever made. Literally. This one smells very similar to the original Viva La Juicy, but still very pretty!

so fresh and so clean.

3. caldrea hand soap: The ginger pomelo smells amazing! They sent 2 cute minis that I immediately tossed in my bag.

yu-be, you see.

4. yu-be moisturizing skin cream: I received a sample of this previously from Sephora and LOVED IT. This is a awesome moisturizer. It feels light, yet rich. Not greasy at all! There is a slight camphor smell, but that goes away pretty quickly. Use it anywhere: face, hands, legs, arms, and even lips!

And for the grand finale…

a full-size razor!

5. schick hydro silk razor: I was *super* excited to find a full-size razor in my Birchbox! And a fancy one at that… The water-activated moisturizing serum has marine extracts and shea butter and hydrates your skin. This came to vegas with me.

What was in your August Birchbox, Glitter Girls?

friday five.

Ah, Friday…we thought you would never get here! Here’s what we’re wearing/doing/loving for the next forty-eight hours.

1. Nails. We’ve done mint, we’ve done lilac…this weekend we’re rocking this pretty yellow shade. NYC Lexington Yellow is the perfect yellow: not too neon, not too school bus. Sure, this sunny shade screams summer…but we also love it for fall. Picture it with grey, black and cream.

2. Fresh Flowers. Whether you get them from Bi-Lo (L) or the Farmer’s Market (J), fresh flowers make the *biggest* difference at home. Here are some cute ideas you can totally do with a grocery store bouquet.

poppin' bottles.

Hi hi hi Glitter Girls!

Laura and I are always looking for a pretty way chill our beverages during parties. Let’s face it, a Coleman party cooler isn’t very “glitter.” Here are a ew pretty options I came across:

1. Ikat Slanted Party Tub and Stand Collection: I ordered this as SOON as I saw it. The slanted back is perfect for wine bottles! My sweet friend, Anny, gave me the matching tray as a housewarming gift. Obsessed.

add a pop-of-color to your tub!

2. Wood Outdoor Cooler: This is a MUST for cook-outs. The guys tend to hang around the grill on the patio and this is the perfect housing for their beverages!

how perfect is this for a cook-out?

3. Chevron Beverage Tub: Hosting a bridal/baby shower? Throw a little color into the mix!

our chevron obsession continues…

4. Black & White Damask Beverage Bucket: We’re also obsessed with damask. And anything black and white. (We’re obsessed with LOTS, okay?) The deeper tub is great for stacking water bottles. Or multiple bottles of wine… either way.

love the fun print!

5. Personalize your beverage tub with a monogram: I particularly love this one because you can swap the ribbon for different colors on holidays. They also make really great gifts for newlyweds…

tres chic.

How will you be chilling your beverages this summer? (it’s hot, y’all.)
