True confessions: we’ve both been nesting lately (J’s a newlywed, and L’s expecting any day now!). Since a whole-house overhaul isn’t an option for either one of us, we’re always on the lookout for ways to improve/enhance our abodes with found objects and a little (or a lot!) creative styling. One of the easiest ways to refresh a room is to re-style a bookshelf or cabinet. Read on for our tips on styling your shelves.
First, a little inspiration from one of our favorite designers Windsor Smith:
Next, assess your books. Start by dividing them by spine color. Remember to peek under dust jackets – sometimes the actual book spine works better with your scheme than the shiny jacket. Give yourself options! If that doesn’t produce compelling results, try sorting by size. This process is trial and error – just keep rearranging your piles until you get several groupings you like. Don’t be scared to venture outside your living room – sometimes you can find the perfect size/color book in your kitchen, child’s room, etc. Don’t be afraid to mix it up!
Now, experiment with placement. Switch up your stacks on the shelves – place some books vertically, some horizontally. You can vary the arrangements within the same shelf, or do one shelf horizontally, the next vertically, etc.
Finally, incorporate non-books into your arrangements. Plants, textiles, pretty boxes, ceramic animals or bowls, etc are what give your shelves personality! Don’t run out and buy stuff – just go on a treasure hunt around your house. This cheat sheet from Domaine home is a great starting point.
To get you started, here are two shelfie looks using some of our favorite objects.
TRADITIONAL trappings like a chinoiserie ginger jar and gold loving cup get punched up with leopard-bound books and malachite boxes.
GLAMOROUS black and white accessories are the perfect partner to pink and gold accents.
